Hello All

I have a gearbox issue on my F reg, 2.5td 110, county - 5 speed standard issue job

The car actually has a 200tdi engine in it, but I retained the old 2.5td gearbox when i did the mod and fitted a disco transfer box to it

So this is a gearbox issue related to a standard 2.5td gearbox (whatever type that is !)

The background is, basically the Gearbox has been fine up until today with no funny noises etc, all working smooth and fine, no crunching, no noises..... A good gearbox.

However driving today, it was hard to select reverse when coming out of a parking slot and then it became stuck in 2nd gear, with a floppy lever.

The gear stick went loose and you could move it around in a complete square, forward and back with no resistance at all (save the spring force to move it central) and it felt like it was connected to nothing)
it was stuck in second gear, and it was as if the gear-lever / shaft had sheared or come completely loose.

the clutch was working fine (it’s a fairly new clutch) and it was definitely a gearbox internal issue of sorts.

So i managed to limp home in 2nd and got it on the drive, whereby i started to take the top of the box apart to see if i could see anything obvious. the pictures show what i found.

1) Firstly i removed all the gaiter’s and surround etc and removed the actual gear lever first. All appeared well there.

2) I then removed the high/low selector unit and all appeared well in there too.

3) I then removed the whole 'plate' assembly and found the rear selector part loose.

4) It appears there should be some sort of 'pin' that goes through this rear part and attaches it to the selector shaft. There is no sign of one, so if it has come out it’s gone in/through the box somewhere.

5) I didn’t hear anything untoward previously like a crunching or grinding. If this pin has fallen out i suspect it is now at the sump of the box or floating around somewhere. Never the less it’s not there!

6) the big plate i removed (the thing that the gear selector and high low levers attach too) has a fixed rod hanging down that looks like it goes over another loose collar on the gearbox, but this all looks intact and there appears to be nothing missing there. It may be difficult to get that lot all back in line when i put it back together but that’s not my problem at the moment

So ....... I’m no gearbox expert, but it appears to me the pin that holds the rear assembly to the selector shaft has migrated and allowed this to fall off and hence its stuck in the gear it was last selected prior to falling off
what do you guys think ??? ...... is that what it is / looks like to you ?

Has anyone had this before ???? any advice welcome, especially reinstallation etc

I’m in knutsford cheshire by the way.

great - thanks for the info gents ..... i thought as much

is this common ?

sorry about the large pictures - still learning

i hope if i get this pin and put it all back together it should be fine !

cheers

hi james

ill try with a small magnet to see if i can fish anything out, but space is limited as im sure you know

have you changed this pin before - i pressuming its some sort of slotted spring pin that is squeezed in ?

ill check all the bits before i reassemble to make sure there is nothing else loose !

Cheers Freelaner

have you got any advice for refitting or is it just fiddle with it until it fits !

the thing I am concerned with is on the underside of the plate, there is a 'fixed fork' that hangs down and looks like it goes over a sliding kind of bearing that's connected to a fork that goes down into the gearbox.

is it just a case of making sure this fork slides over this bearing thing ?

cheers

yes its 5th gear interlock ,just ensure its aligned before fitting top

Just to update all on this

The defect was caused by the cotter pin falling out of the gear selector shaft thus allowing the selector fork to fall off down into the gearbox.

The fix was to remove the top gearbox plate where the gear change lever goes in and retrieve the fork, fit it back onto the gear select shaft and fit the new cotter pin. It took me a couple of attempts to refit the plate and the fork correctly into the gear shafts (a bit fiddly and didn't work the first time i refitted it) but once in properly it fixed it completely

top tip .... before you remove the plate, give the general area a damn good clean, as its think in mud and grime due to being static on the top of the gearbox ... this will stop any crap falling into the box when fiddling with it ..... the cotter pin and new gasket were bought for pennies from my local landrover specialist (Landranger in Middlewhich Cheshire who were very good)

hope this help someone !

cheers
Dave
