Where is a good source of the above. I found ACE fluid was cheap an easy to get from my local LR dealer. It it the same situation for all the transmission oils. Thought I might change them all this weekend.

i ordered 5 liter mtf94 yesterday with the next day delivery but they wont be able to deliver until tuesday due to easter
very reasonable prices though

I ordered 5L of MTF94 & 8L of 75/90 on weds arrived today. All for less than buying 6L 75/90 from Halfords. Excellent price and service. Just need the product to be as good.

this thing with all kind of cheap "MTF94" oils with the specification "meets with the requirements of Rover MTF94" are exactly like the cheap replacements for any other LR parts compared to genuine... the R380 gearbox is very squeamish when it comes to oil so my advice is to bite the bullet and use the real thing in it otherwise dont be surprised if you get a hard gear shift when cold blaming the gearbox even if you think you used the right stuf, cos it's not ...that oil is far from the original one believe me... i've drained out 3 different kind oils in one week from my gearbox(two were "MTF94") cos it selected 1'st and 2'nd like sh*t then i bit the bullet and bought the genuine STC9157( www.paddockspares.com/stc9157-oil-transmission.html ) ... i couldn believe then what difference the oil can make...i know now and i'll not put anything else in my gearbox whatsoever.

some of that will be down to flushing lacquer of gear cones and baulk rings ,not sayoing you cant get poor oils but an r380 in good condition should work equally smoothly on atf

in mine was ATF from the previous owner and changed gears like sh*t... didn't flush nothing just replaced it with a fake mtf94 which improved it a bit, sourced other mtf94 from eBay, te same sh*t....then in short time on a seller's advice I put Castrol syntrans multivehicle(he said it's the best alternative for mtf94... bullish*t as it went worst than with the others)... then I went mad and bought the original stuff, filled the box with it and I was amazed... changed gears with two fingers even at -15* ...so that's the ONE for me no matter what

putting fresh oil in cleans parts in the box which can alter how baulk rings grab gears ,the difficult change is caused by poor baulk rings different oils just alleviate symptoms obviously poor oil will increase symptoms

I believe you... so would this kit help? Ashcroft Transmissions ... I have very handy mechanics to do the job if it worth a try ... though now it's smooth as silk, just want to know for the future, I always rather spend a bit more money to fix things for good than buy used stuff

yes ,though its arguable whether you fit original needle roller bearings back where they have run in to or fit new, at the very least it needs the 7 main bearings and baulk rings ,synchro hub springs and often ftc5070 5th gear if dog teeth have damage

Smith & Alan MTF94 seems ok so far. First drive with new oil ang gear change is nice and smooth from cold.

The supposed MTF94 I took out was dirty red?

It's all a bit odd as the box was fitted by Ashcroft last April and the told me they only use MTF94 but it looks like it has ATF? On first impressions the box seems better with the MTF in it. So good result for me.

Hi James, as you know I'm just at the point of reassembling my stripped R380, could you give a bit more info about the needle rollers and why it might not be a good idea to replace them? I'm assuming it's because the part of the journal they run on will be worn slightly and the new rollers may not sit in the exact same place?

Have you seen/heard any evidence of this causing failures?

Had the oil you've used for over a year now and it's smooth as.....wouldn't have recommended it to you otherwise!!

Cold start this morning, car has sat for 3 days and its like I have a new gearbox. Changing up or down to second now works fine.
Smith Alan MTF94 works a treat.
Amazing!
