I have just bought some Royal Purple gear oil (synth) for my manual trans
and front and rear gears. Does anyone have any experience with this product,
it's hard to find in Canada. Thnx. J

My experience with synthetic gear lube in the transmission was less
than satisfactory. Mobil 1 at least can be so slick that your
synchronizers can't work. They require a certain amount of friction
to spin the brass rings up to speed. Conversely, it works great in
your diffs and transfer case. You'll get more advantage from it in
the dead of winter than in summer. Part of the sluggishness you
experience in winter driving during warm up is overcoming the thick
goo in your gear boxes. Since synthetics pour about the same in sub
zero as they do in summer heat, you eliminate that problem.

If you try it and grind your gears during downshifts, or they feel
rough and snarly, you know the problem.

Try Redline MTL in your transmission. It has friction additives to make
the syncs grab.

It is also a GL-4 oil, most of the synthetics are GL-5:

I run MTL and/or MT-90 in both my vehicles.

Be sure you have the 'right' type of oil.

My front and rear diffs take GL5 and my tranny takes GL4.

I mistakenly used a 'GL4/GL5 compatible' oil in my tranny and it
wouldn't shift well. The syncros wouldn't work so I had to double
clutch it to shift.

I drained it and got plain GL4 semi-synthetic (all I could find easily
here in Canada) gear oil and it has been working sweet since.

Also be warned if you have any small seeps of oil leaking anywhere,
using synthetic will turn a seep into a drip and a drip into a pour.

I put all new seals in mine before I attempted the synthetic oil.
