gear oil leaking

Hi everyone,
after driving my freelander the other day, not ne great distance, when parked i saw oil leaking from underneith. The oil was dripping off the tray on the drivers side. On further inspection it turned out to be gear oil. When looking down through the engine bay i could see the oil coming from the o/s/f drive shaft/ ird. It looks like the oil seal has come out. Is this a known fault? Is it just a case of re-fitting the seal, or new 1, or this showing of somthing more serious? Any advice greatfully appriceated
 
If its leaking from where you describe then you can refit a new seal, means IRD has to be separated from the gearbox.

what type of engine is it?

Wouldnt drive it if its missing gearbox oil
 
hi northern irelander, is it not just a matter of pulling out the drive shaft n pushing a new seal back into place? The engine is a 2.0 diesel, not a td4 tho. no i'm not driving at mo, dont wanna cause ne more damage.

Sorry I thought you meant seal from gearbox to IRD,

If its just a driveshaft seal, you have to drain the IRD, loosen the refill nut first before you undo the drain plug. Mine got stuck


pop out the driveshaft, you'll need to remove the driveshaft nut at the wheel, its staked, so drive out the staked part. you might have to strip part of the hub to suspension arm to allow movement for driveshaft to pop out.

Use a junior bolster, light tap and it will come out no probs

A new seal is tapped in with suitable sized drift or socket set. failing that use the old seal butted up against, tap in with a mallet, slide driveshaft back in, bob's your uncle, you should really use a new driveshaft nut, they are torqued to around 210Nm and the nut flange is staked into the recess on the shaft
