They are quite cheap new iirc, gas ones anyway. A lot depends on the output and how big your workshop is. If you get a gas one find out availability of spares, I had a non branded one many years ago and it packed up and I couldn't find spares anywhere. Then I got an Andrews one because they were quite local and all spares were available. Thermocouple went on it twice in 20 yrs and the parts were still available. I got myself a diesel one which is cheap to run on my home made biodiesel so I gave the gas one away to a mate who still uses it, 33yrs old it is.
I do miss the controllability of the gas one though, the diesel one is flat out or off but I can live with that as it's cheap heat:)

Ooooo how do you make you're own biodiesel?

I just like buying second hand manly because I believe we should re use in stead of keep buying new stuff

Used cooking oil, dangerous chemicals, lots of heat and testing implements.
Google biopowered (forum and wiki) for how to guides.
It tends to take over your life though! Collecting old oil, filtering it, Dewatering it, storing it, constant worrying about the temperature outside (i had two full tanks of solid fuel when I first started and still learning)
Storing the dangerous chemicals safely (virgin methanol, castic soda, explosion risks, dry burn risks, blindness from fumes and possible long term effects resulting in early death)
Costs me about 20p litre to make , space heater burns 4 litres an hour:eek: but I don't mind:cool:
