Top man !. Good to see more and more people swaping chassis on tge D2,s.
Did you strip and galve a good second hand chassis or buy a new one ?.

its all new chassis, though about recon a good second hand, but may as well do the job right. there are mental plates behind rear wheels above the mud flaps there galv as well.

worth doing she only has 88000 on her. was big decision but will last for ever now.

What did it cost, and where did you get it. How long did it take you etc. Not had much info on this so interested to know the ins and outs of it.

well total cost including chassis and fitting was a bout £4500, i got the chassis from Richards chassis, they do the discovery 2 but i don't think the have it on there web site,

it took a while for me as i got a small local garage to do it and he used it for a project while his son was doing a college course, but i was told about week and half full time is the norm.

the underneath of my truck was in good condition which i think made it easier, and the eight bolts that hold the body to chassis just got cut off and replaced, i think the stages were body off and raised up, engine and gearbox out and then basically transferred the all the smaller components from old to new.

Problems that occurred ( on my truck may be different on other trucks)

the engine cut off switch in engine bay right and corner has a wire behind the noise suppression material, never noticed this until trying to start it with new chassis and wouldn't start, this took ages to figure it out and only by chance we found it.

While ordering the chassis, My truck is D2 mrk2 i asked or a D2 chassis not a D2 mrk2 chassis, again got the truck back together all good and working but the front wheels and slightly off set to right (passenger side).I got sold a mrk1 chassis there is a bracket on the
mrk 1 where the panhard rod bolts this is a different angle to then mrk 2 chassis on that keeps the wheels centred, this difference between the chassis's i didn't know, to remedy this we have to got and buy a D1 panhard rod which brought the wheels back in to line.

there was a water pipe out the back of the engine that the guy had to cut to get the engine out but this only cost few pounds to replace.

while i was in the underneath of it, all the brake pipes got done and all the metal work got painted.

I guess deciding weather its worth it for the longevity of the truck. i wont get the money back but the rest of my truck is cracking condition so i went for it.

Forgot to mention while fitting the ACE on the chassis new holes had to be drilled and threaded rod used to fit it to the chassis as the pre drilled hole weren't matching minor detail but there all the other pre drilled hole were great.
 
i suppose if you did this to make money, you would not have to be in a rush to get a return, as you would have to have a buyer who understood and wanted a D2, but if like me you like your D2 that much i suppose then we are all 'enthusiasts', but money is the biggest thing, but like yourself and derwentdolly, Gemsdad etc who have gone down the line of the new chassis, it's either you do or you don't, but all depends if your going to keep it or not,

Thanks DiscodriverCumbria, aye its kind of pushed me in to an enthusiasts mode as ive spent all the money on it and to sell it your not getting the enjoyment out of it. still in two minds to sell or not to. we will see

As you said, you will never get your money back. Wouldn't stop me from doing it though if funds and time were there. It would be a good feeling never having to fret about the chassis again. Good job mate.
 
Well done, i have just had mine done but got a cleen second hand chassis that had been galvanised and a firm in the north east did it plus all new brake lines (copper) and clutch , slave cylinder and seals here and there.
like a new motor now.
 
The reason I ask is I have bagged a " wax oiled from new " chassis from a breaker and am having it acid stripped and galved. It is also a 3A chassis which matches mine. I'll be doing the swap myself using block and tackle from a barn roof.

Good luck with it Del, if I've solved my coolant in oil issues with the AMC head I just fitted then a galv chassis shall be had next :D

I have jamesmartin to thank,for replacing the chassis on my D2,plus other work that i wanted doing,he did a fantastic job as well,this was commented on by my local landy specialist.:D
