I have bought what was advertised as a good 300tdi galvanisd bulkhead. Bought blind off ebay and picked up by friend who was local for what seemed to be a very good price. Now that I have it in my posession I am unconvinced that it is galvanized, I think it has been elcetro plated. It is definitely plated but still has the rough finish from shot blasting and is not the shiny smooth "rippled/marbled" appearance finish I expect from hot dip products. There are also not the tell tale drip marks/runoff and there is no evidence of finishing/re-drilling/tapping but the threads are all present.
On closer inspection there are also some areas that need repair as far as I am concerned. The top rail below the vents has a thin section which has been cut out and welded back, but no new metal let in, and the vent mesh has been welded on rather than the riveted frames( also not filled with zinc as I would expect form hot dip).
Based on this it seems that rather than being a very good price, what I paid is an ok-high price for a mostly good bulkhead.
My question is can you hot dip over electro plate?
Once I have carried out the minor repairs mentioned above there will be a need to re-treat, and ideally I would like hot dip as it gives a thicker coating more suited to outside use.

Hot dip and Electroplated are both "Galvanized" which is why I am always careful to spec "Hot-dip Galvanized".

Yes you can hot dip over electro - it's still zinc.

Good to hear you can hot dip over electro, I thought you probably would be able to. I did not realise that electro-plating is also called galvanising. I thought galvanising was hot dip and electro plating was electro/zinc plated! I will have to be more carful in future.

As an aside that also explains why when I complained to paddocks that one of my series inner arches wasn't galvanised when that is what I had ordered they were insistent that it was and sent me side by side photos of it next to a plain steel one. But one was hot dip, and one was electro plated. I wanted both hot dip!

On a 300TDi the vent mesh is welded into position, I ground mine out when I had the bulkhead galvanised and bonded it back into position afterwards.

Good to know, although I may go for the riveted version as the current mesh has been removed and badly welded back into place. I was going to remove it to tidy it up so would be easy enough to retro fit the earlier version.
