Fumes still entering cabin

.....on my 110 TD5 CSW

I have investigated and cannot find out how it is happening. What l can say is that it's caused by diesel fumes getting to the heater intake on top of the front wing.
You can smell it strongly in this area, although not always. Opening the bonnet reveals that the viscous fan tends to blow air over the N/S engine bay area, and the fumes come with it.

The manifold seems fine. The exhaust looks OK. I have felt around for leaks with the engine running and can find none.
I checked all the EGR pipes and hoses and all look fine.

I am at a loss now.
 
manifold gasket leaking(manifold warps and breaks the fixing studs) ,down pipe , if its from engine bay other wise rear door seals
 
The manifold nuts are all in place, including the one behind the turbo.
Looking at the manifold itself, there's no sign of leaks, i.e no black soot marks.

If you turn off the heater intake (fan switch right up) it does not happen, so is definitely coming in through the heater blower. But as l said, you can smell the fumes around the N/S front wing where the heater intake is.

Looks like it will have to go to the local LR lndy and see if they can figure it out, as l hate the smell of diesel in the morning

Unrelated to a Landy, but my Combo does the same, open the drivers window and fumes waft in, garage friend of mine said it could possibly be an over fuelling issue.....
 
Over fuelling at idle speed maybe? As the actual fuel economy is fine. There's a strong smell of diesel fumes all round the Defender at idle speed.

How can l check for this? How is it adjusted? The fuel pressure regulator was replaced fairly recently.
 
My Combo doesn't seem to use too much fuel either ( tend to drive like an old fart) these days, but I only get the fumes whilst driving.
Obviously a fuel leak somewhere, it's either vapourising on contact, is there no obvious wet patch either under the Landy or below any fuel lines ? Or possibly an injector leak....
 
Just had a look at another possible cause, the fuel pressure regulator valve, if the diaphragm is damaged then fuel will leak into the vacume pipe !
I'm no expert, but another area to consider !!
 
I have put my hand around the manifold and cannot feel any leaks. I also took the engine covers off to look at the EGR valve etc but all seemed fine there.
There is some diesel leaking diwn the back of the engine though.

Basically the exhaust fumes appear around the NSF wing and are sucked into the heater. I suppose it could just be from the exhaust, but it never happened on my 90 TD5 and the exhaust is nearer to the front wing on that!
 
If it's getting in the cabin, after you find the leak, you may want to fit new seals to the heater system.

I had something similar...turned out to be slightly loose fitting at the exhaust egr blanking plate. Tightened up, fixed the smell. Then I replaced all the gaskets in the heater system.

Had a few other loose hoses as well. Turbo hose, egr replacement at the intake.... Both were ****in a lil oil. Could have also been the culprits.

Been a while since the fix, thus the edit.

Main take away, look for the soot.

if everything has been checked and somehow you are still getting it. You could fit a snow cowl negating the need for that rubber valve that doesn't really seal. Seal that up and see.

As a check before you go to that sort of expense you could try sealing up the rear door with a suitable tape just to check that isn't the source. another idea, is it getting in via the seatbox and seal that up...my battery box has all sorts of holes in it
 
I have had the Landy to a specialist and they say there is "carbon deposit" in the engine bay so "something" is leaking.
Also the exhaust is heaviley sooted up, maybe due to the Landy doing short journeys all day.

The specialist recommended initially blanking off the EGR valve which "can jam and cause bad exhaust smells"
