I have investigated and cannot find out how it is happening. What l can say is that it's caused by diesel fumes getting to the heater intake on top of the front wing.
You can smell it strongly in this area, although not always. Opening the bonnet reveals that the viscous fan tends to blow air over the N/S engine bay area, and the fumes come with it.
The manifold seems fine. The exhaust looks OK. I have felt around for leaks with the engine running and can find none.
I checked all the EGR pipes and hoses and all look fine.
I am at a loss now.
