Yes and no. The bell housing bolt pattern is different you will need a 6cyl bell housing as your s1 bell housing will have a smaller lay shat bearing.
 
so whats the difference between synchro and no synchro as my old series 3 used to have full synchro but felt sloppy on the stick ( like stirring a can of paint with a golf club )
but the series 2 box i have in this one feels nice n tight and fairly smoothe as far as they go

so whats the main differences in the two :confused:
 
Am I right in thinking suffix D came in late in 1981? I think my March '81 series 3 probably has a suffix C. :eek:

Even though its a full synchromesh box mine likes to make changes slowly. When cold it doesn't always like coming down the box into 2nd (no crunching - just a bit obstructive but fine when warm) 3rd gear is a bit notchy even when warm but no crunching and seems a quiet box all in all - never jumps out of gear. I've just assumed these are normal characteristics of this simple box?
