full beam/headlight issue

Had a search and cant find anything related to this so maybe some of the experts on here could help.

Horn and flash full beam stopped working, before paying out on new stalk sprayed with contact cleaner and horn and flash works again , happy days.

But now when i put headlights on and then put full beam on the headlights go out completelty and im left with side lights, turn main beam off headlights come back on (flash main beam works properly - headlights stay on.

wiring short? earth issue? stalk issue? or just never drive at night on an unlit road?

sounds like stalk is still dodgy to me, they arent unknown for it

Sounds like a bad connection. Either in the wiring connected to the stalk or the brass contacts in the stalk itself. Try removing the spade connections one at a time and clean the male and female connections. Any problem with electrics on series can usually be traced to bad earths, often earth connections that arent readily obvious to the fault.

looks like ive of got a day of playing where the f*ck does this wire go ahead of me then - i doubt any of the colours match the diagrams.

The original wiring colours will match the circuit diagram, the problems arise when people add all sorts of stuff then remove it but leave the wires in place.

hopefully you can't change too much on the stalk, he says with a naive understanding of what people can do to 40 year old cars

Iirc investigating my stalk contacts full beam flash contacts main and dip beam together so it could be the live side of full beam contact that's dodgy.

It's almost always the contacts in the stalk, to say its a primative set up is talking it up.

ah the old "it's the wrong colour wire but I'll put the right colour insulating tape on it so people know what it ...oh the pubs open I'll put the tape on tomorrow.... sod it i know what it is no need to bother

Every single wire rear of the cab in my ambulance is yellow!

Whip yer stalk apart, it's easy enough to figure out what's supposed to happen and what isn't happening.

I'd suggest throwing it away but the new pattern ones are worse

Using a relay to take the load off the stalk is a good idea ... I must get around to doing mine.

Little update, got round to having a good look at the stalk, the contact for full beam needed more cleaning, thanks for the advice to look at the stalk first, all working perfectly

And me, on the other hand, I hardly drive it in the dark, or the rain, or the cold, or really hot days.
