fuel system cleaning

Has anyone ever had there fuel system chemically cleaned by the machine they hook up to your landy?

I have seen it done on large Marine Engines and also advertised for cars.

If someone has had it done can you comment on the results please and who did it, what it was called and the cost.

The super yachts I work on and mentain here in Cannes use normal diesel and MTU 4000 series engines are chemically cleaned yearly to mentain performance thats all.

Large tankers us a fuel oil basically refracted lower than diesel, horrible stuff if you get it on you...stinks for weeks.

I dont trust anything other than good quality (i.e. not supermarket) normal diesel.
Ive tried different "cleaners" over the years, my Saab 93, always ran better after I added a bottle to a tank, BUT, it was simply boosting the rating of the fuel, which was masking the fact that the inlet plenum chamber was full of crud, it didnt actually clean anything.
After stripped out and cleaned the inlet system the car ran much better without any so called cleaner being added.

Co-incidence or not, both times my D2 has had issues its been after I added injector cleaner!

I dabbled in veg oil a while back... seemed to give a bit more power/smoother - probably just in my mind!... but this may have introduced a diesel bug into my system, or I have been told the veg oil can dislodge crud in the fuel system, which in turn causes blockages...
I ended up pulling my fuel pump, and tried cleaning the black snot from the gauze filter, but the pump soon gave up on me...
I now run some of the Millers diesel addative through every now and then/when I remember as it is supposed to stop the diesel bug returning - another boaties tip, where their fuel often sits for long periods in damp conditions, ideal for the bug.

LiquiMoly Diesel Purge is very good stuff - you run the engine on it neat with the intake and return pipes going into the can in the engine bay until it's gone. You can tell the engine is more perky afterwards and that it's not just a placebo because none of the cleaner goes into the regular fuel tank to act as a cetane booster.

I do it once or twice a year, usually around MOT time for my 300tdi, and it helps.

me personally I would stay away from cleaning chemicals and algea killers
I work on roadtrain engines the engines that run cleaners etc we are for ever renewing injector seals

on my td5 I find its just as easy to open up the fuel inspection cover located under the carpet above the fuel tank I remove the pump assembly where algea and debri collects clean cartridge and wipe down inside the tank change fuel filter .wont need to clean tank for 2 years
