Hello

when I turn the key to position 2 the fuel pump start running and stops only after about 30 sec. Is it normal?
If I start the engine before, sometimes it stalls and very hard to restart. When I wait until it stops, it starts well and does not stall.

Thanks

are you sure it stops as it shouldnt or is it that its just excessively noisy to begin with till air is purged,it might be worth checking the filters in pump housing ,then move onto other causes

every time when turn the key to pos 2 (not starting the engine) I hear that is is running (quite noise). At the begining, I bought is about a year ago, I did not pay attantion to it, I started the engine and it worked. Since I have cold start issues (engine stalls after start) I have started to watch this.
does it mean that it does not stop after 30 sec, just purge out the air and start working normally? Should I take the pump assy out and check, clean, the filter?

It should stop after 30 seconds if the engine isn't started. But it does sound as though you have problems as suggested.

i hate to contradict people but i must... cos it's important to be accurate on these things... it's not about 30 seconds, it's around 3 minutes, that's why the purging sequence takes the same
FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM - TD5 - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION 19-1-11 said:
Operation
When the ignition switch is moved to position II, the fuel pump relay in the engine compartment fusebox is energised
by the ECM. Battery voltage is supplied from the fuel pump relay to the fuel pump which operates. If engine cranking
is not detected by the ECM within a three minute period, the ECM will 'time-out', de-energising the fuel pump relay.

When the ignition is turned off the ECM timer will reset.....

I must time how long the fuel pump noise on my D2 takes before it shuts off (normal pump noise, not the purging-of-air noise; have replaced a fuel filter recently so know what that noise is like ;) )
I've always waited until the glow plug light has extinguished, then she fires up just fine. (touch wood!)

Always happy to be contradicted by you Fery.

Mine does this when the tank is less than half full, sometimes I have to let it sit in position II on the ignition for a few mins as it won't start otherwise. I heard of a fault with the fuel pick up within the fuel tank where it draws air through a perished pipe or something. If I keep a full tank is doesn't do the burbly 'purge' noise and you can barely hear the fuel pump whilst the glow plugs are warming up and she will always start first time

My tank is also less than half full and it was also close to minimum when first had this issue.....
Also tried during the last 3 starts to let the key in pos2 for at least 30 sec, the pump gets quite than the engine starts fine.

But tomorrow I will change the fuel filter and also fill the tank full to see what happens.
after changing the fuel filter, is it difficult to purge the air out of the system, or just I need to run the automatic purging sequence?

today I have changed the fuel filter, was really dirty.... I filled the new one with fuel then screwed on. Then I run the purging sequence, same noice as before, but after one cycle the engine started well. I also filled the tank full. Tomorrow morning i will check how it starts.
