So I just changed the fuel filter for my 200tdi defender. After I'd put the new filter on I tried to bleed the air out using the manual pump on the fuel pump after loosening the screw on top of the filter. I did this for ages and nothing happened, I pumped it for 10 mins and no fuel pumped into the fuel filter.

Have I been doing something wrong?

Eventual I just cranked the engine a bit, screwed the screw up on top of the fuel filter and then started the engine. It cough a spluttered a bit and some black smoke came out the exhaust but just went to ticking over fine.left it running for 10mins with no probs

Do I still need to bleed air out of it? Have I caused any perminant probs by not bleeding all the air out? Why didn't the hand pump work?

Please don't laugh at my failure to complete a 1 spanner task!

It's not a necessity as pumping the primer should fill it but you may just not have pumped it for long enough to fill it before you tried to start it. Filling it with diesel usually let's you bypass the bleeding phase. Was there any resistance whatsoever from the primer handle?
