Fuel Pump loud

Hi Members.
All suggestions appreciated I have noticed over the last week that the fuel pump is a bit more noisy you can hear a sucking slurping noise while driving and on tick over, the noise gets quicker with engine speed could this be the fuel pump in the rear wheel arch and if so is it normal cheers Arctic2

Could be the pump on the way out, although they are a little noisey anyways. I would change the fuel filter if you haven't done it recently as a clogged filter will make the pump work harder

Not sure what the arrangement is on yours, but I have two LP pumps, one in the fuel tank and one under the bonnet. It's a Td4 on the cusp of when they moved the under bonnet one to the wheelarch.

My front one went very noisy a year or so ago and, suspecting it was about to fail, I bought a new one ready for the fateful day. That day eventually came (at work, in the snow), but what had happened was the in-tank one had completely failed. The noise I could hear was the front one being slowly starved of fuel and was running semi-dry when the tank pump was failing.

New in-tank pump and all was well.

Thank you for the above replies, I have had a fuel filter almost 5 weeks now and have still not found time to fit it, hopefully this weekend I can sort it out.

I do not have the UBP so therefore it as to be in the rear wheels arch, what is the best way to test the ITP is it by listening ? when the ignition is set to II I also have a couple of spare UBP from my R75 days, one if not two are pierburg I am lead to believe these are the better UBP what I need to find out now is do they fit the FL 1 cheers Arctic2

That's a bitch - you get all prepared and its the other pump!

Yes, when my fuel pump went it got a lot louder. Easily replaced, all you need from memory is a 10mm socket & spanner. I bought a ratchet spanner so it was quicker. I had to rebuild my tray that it fits to the first time as the Ali rivets had corroded. Then I painted it in hammerite.

Cheers will keep the above in mind when get the chance to take a look raining here again today

just been down to the shed and dug out the fuel pumps I have two pierburg I am hoping they are the same on the FL 1 Arctic2

I'm sure the fittings are different. They have plastic clip on pipe fixings that you squeeze to release. So maybe the pumps aren't the same.

Hi Mike.
I had the fuel pump /filter and snow box off the car today and the pumps are the same, pics below all that I need to do is change the crimped clip for a jubilee clip and job should be a good one.

Aha! That explains the stray connector I found when I changed my pump and filter today - I don't have a fuel burning heater.

Those filters sure don't like coming out - mine appeared to be the original and all kind of witness marks on it from assorted levers and molegrips. Ended up putting a cut all the way along the casing to loosen it's grip on the filter and even then it took some force to persuade it out. All sorted now but not a job I want to do again in a hurry.

A lot easier with the box detached from the car, also was your earth wire connector still intact, I had to make one up for now until the one I have ordered arrives cheers Arctic2

I had the box detached and on the work bench and it still wasn't budging! Earth was corroded but intact I'm pleased to say

Yes I had to tap mine out with a small chisel I have now ordered another snow box with pipe work so if I have to change again in the future I will just transfer it over right away Arctic2
