Fuel Pump issue

I Just bought a new fuel pump for my defender 110. The one that goes into the gas tank. The one I pulled out it a straight pipe, with no fuel pump on it. Is this standard and do I put the new fuel pump in or do I just use the old one.
 
I figured it out, apparently 2.5td and 200tdi have external fuel pumps, so the straight pipe is the only pipe going into the tank. The external fuel pump is mounted on the right side of the engine. NOT sure when the vehicle pumps change to internal, but mines an 87. So that gives you a starting point i guess.
 
All the diesels up to and including the 300tdi have a lift pump mounted on the side of the engine - if yours is an 87 diesel then you need a lift pump - how do you know your pump is knackered if you didn't investigate it?

Does this mean you now have a TD5 fuel pump for sale!?
 
i don't think changing from a 300tdi to td5 will be fun. i've not had a good look at a td5 but i think you'll need a full rewire.

also, people prefer tend to prefer the 300.

give me first dibs on it when you sell it ;)
 
The TD5 has been fitted a handful of times into older vehicles, basically you would want a TD5 Defender or Discovery so you can get all the things you need, but your going to need the ECU all the associated wiring, throttle pedal, plumbing so on and so forth.

There is a guy who got a TD5 to run relatively stand alone by getting an after market ECU, this took all the sensor feeds from the engine and fed back only what the engine needed to run in a simple box - I think it was about £3500 though.

If it could be done neatly, in a well engineered manner I would consider it, but to be honest if I was going to go to all the trouble I would fit the TDV6 which has been done using a Simtek ECU.

I haven't checked it yet still just restoring the tank. Por and new inner coponets so far. I have a month before I actually get to the engine. But will let everyone know when I do.
