Normally on starting during ignition warmup I could hear a slight whirring from the rear before starting. Lately this became more of a screeching sound and the engine started to cut out after a few hundred yards. Now there is just a little noise which stops and the engine won't start. Could this be the furl/lift pump? I would appreciate any advice, thanks in advance.

when you remove sender/pump let it drain before lifting out completely it retains a fair bit of diesel and fit rubber seal to sender not the tank when refitting ,you will need sometning like snipe nose pliers to release both sides of clip at same time ,ensure you know pipe colour order for refitting

thanks for that, will get pump on order. reading your other thread re newbies i agree with your logic, theres alot of good people on this forum. i don,t post much, but do log in regular just to learn a bit and have a grin. thanks again.

You don't say which vehicle this relates to, but I'm assuming it's a Disco of some sort.

When posting it's helpful if you can give vehicle details such as model/year/engine type or model/gearbox type.

If this is a D2 TD5 then it only has the in-tank fuel pump - there's no lift pump as in the TDi engines.

The squealy noise you're hearing could be:

1. the pump fighting against the blocked pump filter - take out pump and clean filter then re-install;

2. The pump purging air

3. The pump about to die.

I would start by cleaning the filter in the pump assembly and see where that takes you.

Replacement pumps are between £120 and £250 depending on make and supplier.

Good luck

Dave

I've just took my pump out of my td5 tonight it's been noisy for a week or two and wow if only I could put pictures from my phone onto here via m iPad, iam surprised it was running at all. Cleaned all the crap off it and chucked it back in and it's miles quieter. Going to put a filter on it tomorrow just to be on he safe side. Wish I'd done it ages ago now it was a piece of cake to do as mines a 7 seater so just removed the seat mounts in the floor and cut a line in my carpet between the two holes to make a flap for access went back nice and you'll never know, didn't fancy taking all the sides out etc just to remove the carpet

Is it possible to refurbish the pump then? would save me a couple of hundred quid.

As I said before, most of the problems with these pumps are caused by an in-pump filter. Take out the pump, clean the filter and put the pump back - as someone else has done recently in a post by Langer.

thanks for all your help, Biglad & Langer, have had the pump out, pretty clean really apart from a coating of black slime, looks like its dead. Thanks for the offer Cambridgecockney, but had already ordered. cheers all.
