Fuel Guage Dropped To Empty

Hi,

I am looking to see if anyone else has had this problem, or where I should start to look.
I have an 08 Freelander GS TD.
I was driving on the motorway yesterday and the fuel warning came on all of a sudden after I put £30 of fuel in 10 mins before.
I checked the range on the computer and it said 160 miles. Anyway, I managed to keep driving for another 20minutes to get home.
I have checked it this morning after restarting and the range now says 0 and the guage empty still. But there is no sign of a fuel leak anywhere.
Has anyone had this problem before or is it more likely that there is a fuel leak somewhere.

There won't be any sign of a fuel leak if all the fuel has already escaped, try putting some more in and getting under to have a look. Did you notice the guage dropping quicker than usual before the warning light came on?

No not at all. it literally dropped in less than a minutes from what I saw. My thought that there was no fuel leak was because I managed to keep going for so long on a motorway and then in a traffic jam, i would of thought if 30 litres or so same out that quickly whatever was left wouldn't last that long.
I will put some more in though and see if I can see anything coming out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good luck, if it is leaking, let's hope it's just a pipe joint

It'll either be a large leak or the fuel level sensor has failed. To loose that much fuel in such a small amount of time is strange, especially if there's no sign of the leakage. So I suspect the fuel level sensor is faulty.
 
My 2007 model did that. No leak. Just a dodgy fuel sender gauge. It would return to normal again after a while.

Seem to recall you can’t get to the sender from under the rear seats, and required a rather expensive visit to LR to take the prop off and drop the fuel tank.

I would of thought so if that much fuel dropped out. Going to get a Jerry can of fuel in it in the morning and see if the gauge or the range computer shifts. If I see no leak then I guess it will be a faulty sensor, or at least I am hoping that is what it is.

Im hoping that is what it is, as I can see no evidence of fuel splash, baring in mind I was doing about 60 when the warning light suddenly came on. My only worry is tapping the tank it sounds empty where there should be about 25 to 30 litres of fuel in there.

Im going to put £10 of fuel in a jerry can in the morning as I cant risk trying to drive it to the garage, then will see if the gauge shifts at all.

If you were travelling at speed it would've made a right mess if it had leaked. Thinks it's extremely likely to just be your gauge gone faulty.
