Fuel Gauge Problems

Does anyone know if a defender td5 fuel pump is longer than a discovery td5, as mine runs out with a 3rd of a tank left, pump dont seem to go low enough and i put a disco one in as looked the same as what came out unless it was wrong one when i got the vehicle !!!

Dunno the answer to that question, but how about measuring the tank and pump? Or is the pump inside already?

well then... take it out :D

or drill a hole to measure them. I can offer the bottom of the tank, about three inch dia should be enough ;)



On a more serious note: when it's "empty", unscrew the tank drain screw (have a pot ready...) and measure from there the distance to the pump. Or just measure how much comes out after you've run out of fuel (have a canister full of diesel)

not too sure about the dipstick idea, but thanks philvy.

I think im going to try testing the gauge and sender tonight to see what I need to order to get it fixed.
 
Try wrapping a small wad of cotton wool on a long string, set it on fire and drop it into the tank, you should be able to see how much petrol you have, or gas as you quaint, but retarded, americans call it.

Well seeing that I am actually English, born and raised, came to the U.S. for my parents work so I still call it petrol (not the America’s that a couple continents, you must have failed your grammar school geography courses, its ok though cus we need special people in this world to do the **** jobs). If you knew how to read or were bothered to you would have seen that in an earlier post. Also, its a diesel so your love affair for the whole fire inferno will not happen, sorry storm.

I had a similar problem with a fuel sender or a gauge. The way to test is simple. Unplug the sender. Short out the connector with a multimeter and turn on ignition. The gauge should rise to the full position. If not then then possible gauge/wiring problem. If it does it's the fuel sender. Simples. Use the search function as loads of threads on fuel sender issues.
