Freelander 1 Fuel Burning Heater

Advice please.
I have a Freelander 1 TD4 2004 SE and it has a fuel burning heater mounted under the near side front wheel arch. I have recently noticed that the unit has continued to run, sometimes very noisily and sounds like a garage space heater, after the engine has been switched off and the ign key removed. This can last for several minutes. I understand this unit is only fitted to help warm up speed in the footwells so could I easily disconnect it, or is it an easy obvious fix?

Nothing to fix. What you are hearing is the fan continuing to run after the fuel has stopped. This is completely normal. I'd not disconnect the FBH or the heater will be rubbish.
 
The time to worry is when and if it runs in the warm weather temp above 5c to 10c then the FBH pcb maybe at fault, or the outside temp switch can be faulty I change mine and all was ok also did the inline top hose stat.
 
My FBH sensor has failed. This means it doesn't fire the heater until the air temperature gets below 0°C I've linked the sensor out so now the heater runs the whole time the engine does. I've got a toasty heater and it doesn't really use much extra fuel.

Thanks for that. I'll try replacing the outside temp sensor.
 
My FBH tends to growl/trumpet for about 30 seconds about 1 minute after starting on a cold morning. Is this common?
And yeah it does run over after switch off. Amuses people passing by when they see the plume from under the front
 
Mine is an ebay recond job. failed 3 times, got it back after 3rd return-to-base for 'repair'

Mine stays on ALL the time, until the car battery goes flat... see other thread if yer interested

Yes they can make all sorts of odd noises until the flame has established. It's an oil fired boiler so will make noise. There is a silencer available if you want to use the FBH as a preheater. I'm looking into a remote control ready for next year!!

If you don't want it on, you can pull the fuse out!. It [the FBH] can mask faults with the engine thermostat, so worth disabling as an experiment at least. I would expect the MPG to go down with the FBH fighting against a slow thermostat, but I have no evidence to support this.

In theory the FBH shouldn't make much difference to a stuck open thermostat. The radiator is capable of cooling much higher thermal loads than a 5Kw heater. Additionally the FBH is plumbed into the heater circuit, simply to help boost the heater matrix temperature when the engine is cool.
The FBH doesn't use much fuel either. It's consumption is just over 1/2 a litre an hour on full power and half that on 1/2 power. I've not noticed much difference in MPG with mine set to run all the time on its own thermostat.

How much is the sensor and where csn i get one? Mine is coming on when outside temp is about 10 degrees but not all the time.
 
Hey good people, I'm new on here however there is some really great info. On that point does anyone have the installation instructions for the fuel burning heater. I believe Land Rover sold a kit with instructions, long since obsolete it seems. I have a freelander 1 TD4 2006...info would be graitfully received!
 
Just take one from a scrap TD4 with the FBH fitted. That way removing it, you'll how how it was fitted. Fitting into your vehicle is just a reversal of the removal process. Make sure you get all the parts needed to complete the installation. ;)

Hopefully member Devilish will see the thread as he refurbishes them sometimes for our R40 and a few Freelander ones, as most which are sold a working if fact do not they may start up but they will not be in the best working condition.
 
I haven't looked but can I take it from the racket from the front passenger side the other (cold) morning that I have one of these heaters? It's a HSE model but I assume the FBH is an option?
