1998 300Tdi, the Wabco brake vacuum pump has started leaking engine oil again and although the original type fuel lift pump is still ok I'd like to head off some of the air leak problems that some mates have had with air leakages between tank and lift pump.
I'm proposing to replace the Wabco vac pump with an electric unit off a Volvo S40 or S60, fit a blanking plate to the engine block, hopefully eliminating an oil leak, the electric pump is also a lot cheaper than the Wabco
I also want to put an electric fuel pump right back at the fuel tank to make the existing "suck" system a "push" system, negating the potential line and fitting air leaks, I'll fit a blanking plate to the block where the original pump was mounted.
All easily reversed if needed.
Has anyone done these mods and what's your thoughts.

Not done them personally, the vac unit is rotary on my 200 so would only be the fuel pump for me unless mine proper packs up on me.

I do know people who have done both and have had great results in noise reduction.

The fuel pumps have been everything from top of the range Facet Gold Flo https://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/p/facet-silver-top-electric-fuel-pump-only-5-0-6-0-psi-fac-st down to the cheapest thing off either the Bay of E or Hamazone for about £10/£12

The vac pumps were Audi electric units.

The electric fuel pump I have is a Facet, very old but not had much use, I carried as a spare for my Range Classic on an around Australia trip in 1989, I never got to use it in anger but a mate of mine borrowed it for an East to West desert trip across Australia in his County and needed to use it to get rid of a fuel line air leak.
I've also got a really fancy filter/sedimenter that I scored off a Toyota that I'll use back at the tank.

Do you not already have a sedimentor fitted?

Often I see people recommending removing them when fuel problems arise but advise against it due to it being the first line of defence and an easy drain point in case you were worried about water or contamination.

Was your RRC carb then? Not sure it would have the right output pressure for the diesel? Always worth an email to Facet or look up the specs.

Yep, still has the original sedimenter, but I don't think it will stand a clean out, I've heard that they sometimes won't re seal after the bowl is removed for cleaning, certainly wouldn't run it without one, it's just the new one I have is mine spec so it's a nice unit.
And that Facet pump got my mates diesel powered County across the desert and back again so it will pump diesel all right, enough to keep my old Disco going I reckon.
