I have just purchased a 1993 LWB Frontera 2.3 diesel 129k miles.

My query (problem) is this...

...when the ignition is switched on the oil pressure reading immediately goes
off the scale and sits there even whilst running. When the ignition is turned
off, the oil pressure reading continues to be off the scale. Over a period of
time -don't know yet exactly how long (hours?)- e.g., overnight, the reading
returns to zero but, again on switching on the ignition it returns to the
high reading and continues to sit there.

I have monitored the oil level and everything is fine.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

My thoughts:

electrical/ guage?

oil pump pressure release valve?

oil filter pressure release valve?

I would value any help to enable me to resolve this.

Cheers and thanks.

If it happens the moment the ignition is switched on (before
the engine is started) it is probably an electrical fault in the
sensor or the gauge or the wiring between the two.

Try wiggling connectors on the sensor and on the back
of the instrument panel (which is easy to remove except
for the limited slack in the speedo cable). Be careful
not to damage the thin flexible PCB on the back of
the instrument panel.

Good point; I hadn't thought of that.

Any idea where about the sensor is located - Haynes manual not specific about
this- as I can't (yet) find it.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks guys: I removed the engine under cover (heavy steel plate held in
place by 4 bolts) and discovered that the wires to the oil switch (next to
the oil filter) had broken. Made new connections and everything is fine.

Again, thanks for all the input.

Lobo.
