Front wheel bearing-P38 replacement

Time to pick your brains----
Took the motor over to the mother country last week for it's MOT-must get round to registering it over here one of these days!!- anyway they put an advisory notice on it for front o/s wheel bearing having slight wear. Whilst I was over, bought a new bearing from Craddocks. Have any of you guys fitted one?? Have read the article on Rangerovers.net and have access to a 50ton hydraulic press at work.
Can any of you give me an indication as to how easy-or hard a job it is to replace them.

hiya irish , ive done one on mine mate , not that hard if you have access to a press , the most fiddley parts of the job i thought was undoing the ring of bolts in the hub and seperating it from the carrier , and then flicking out the bearing retaining clip as it was fairly jammed in with crud.
i used a bit of heat to pop the bearing out , then prior to pressing it back in give the housing a damn good cleaning up with emery .
just be careful pressing the bearing in that you make sure your mandrel is properly located on the outer edge of the race , if you push on the inner bit you will pop the centre of the bearing out and it will be game over mate , i hope this helps .
btw the job took about an hour and a half to do .

Cheers Rick-I had the hub off about 3 months ago to change the halfshaft seal and agree that part is a pain. Cleaned it up and loaded the mating faces with copper grease so hopefully it will come off easier. Did you heat the hub up much to get the old bearing out? (I have a propane torch) and how much pressure did it take-the press at work is 50tons.

hello again mate,if you`ve had the hub off your half way there then , no i didn`t have to use too much heat at all , and once cleaned up you dont need anywhere near fifty tons , i reckon i could have tapped the new bearing into place with a lump hammer if it had come to it .

Cheers Rick-I'll have a go at it in a couple of weeks when I'm on nightshift next. On the Rangerovers.net site, there is a write up on the replacement which shows a "Snap ring" which I take to be a circlip on the hub/bearing assembly, can you remember there being one?

yes mate there is a snap ring not dead sure which side it is , but its only a thin clip type almost like an internal cirlip without any lugs , mine was hidden by all sorts of crud but if you dig around with a screw driver you`ll find it ok , from memory i think there is a cut out in the ends to get a small screw driver in and edge it out .
