Front recovery point for Series Landie

What do you guys recommend then? Currently I just put a rope round the bumper and off we go...but I dare say if I did get properley stuck that would not be such a good idea! I already have a pin type rear tow hitch so that does the job for the rear end.

You can buy bolt on recovery points such as Mitsubishi,landrover, 4X4, OFFROAD RECOVERY POINT, on eBay (end time 24-Aug-09 17:39:48 BST) I think that looks a bit wussey and would only take a few minutes to make one up but more heavy duty. But I am not entirely sure of where to mount it. If I was to just bolt it on the bumper (as near to the front dumb irons as possible I guess) then it will be the fairly thin bumper that is the weak point - or would you not see this as an issue?
 
I wouldnt put it on the bumper. Probably ok 90% of the time, but the one time you really are stuck and need to get out will be the time it gets ripped off.

There are D rings which bolt through the bumper and the use the same mount holes through the chassis. Providing your chassis is solid, I would take this approach.

Would Jate rings attach to the chassis?

Not sure about jate rings. Yeah rope looped around front spring hangars would probably do the job...but when the front of the landie is bogged in mud that wont be so fun!

r.e D rings...yeah the front of my chassis is solid...have you got a link or a pic so I know what i am looking for?
 
I had a look but couldnt see any. Friend has them on his series 2. They sit ontop of the bumper over the existing mount/bolt holes. maybe they are military spec? they are fairly big. keep your eye out for them.

Front bumper is fine provided:
The front dump irons, chassis leg etc & bunter mounting bolts are in good condition (the same applies if you are using D rings)
You have a suitable spreader plate on the back face of the bumper.
(The one in the link shows the spreader plate, but I would be a bit worried about the bolts mounting it to the bumper.)

I might be a bit concerned if it was totally bogged, but I would trust it far more than a rope round a spring hanger (a quick way to wreck a rope)

There is no provision for JATE rings on a Series
 
Fair enough. I guess it is as good place as any to use as a recovery point. Could make something up that bolts there anyway I guess.

Use a couple of chains round the spring hangers then connected by a shackle to your winch rope, better than a sling/strop and if it's bogged fairly deep then get your shovel out to expose the spring hangers. Easy!
 
D Rings fixed through the Bumper fixings work best, that way you can use a towing bridle to spread the load.

That's a lot of bother to go to when 2 chains off the spring hangers spreads the load just fine. but either way is good.
 
I use two of these, i welded a bit of plate to the bumper just for a bit more strength..then they simply bolt on, you can use them upside down as they have a spring retaining clip for your recovery strop.

Cheers guys, some interesting options, will have to see what I can find. I quite like the idea of having 2 recovery points on the bumper - not only can it be used for spreading the load if required but also helps if either one side of the vehicle is face down in crap...or if the recovery vehicle is at an odd angle and the side which the single recovery point is on is bound to be the annoying one (if that makes sense?)
 
Not necessarily, if lifting/slinging the pull is straight (all right, slightly angled) up, when recovering it is forwards, you are putting a shearing strain on the bolts, rather than a linier pull.

i welded some 2" box section between my dumb irons near the bumber and drilled holes and welded a plate in side it to fit a tow ball on. id never use out bolts to the front bumper its fine for towing but not been raged at
