Hi all. Just wondering if anyone could advise me of the easiest way to remove both front half shafts on my 97 DT. Front diff is hanging out and I need to change it. Have the hub bolts out but it wont stir. I was trying to pull the whole lot out just enough to clear the Diff. Just wondering if I'm missing anything?

Thanks all.

Well, the front half shafts go into the cv joints and they then bolt through the hub. You can't just pull the half shafts out through the hub, like you can at the back.

Do you have a copy of RAVE?

Hi Bladerunner. Thanks for reply. I don't have rave but looking at the setup, I have the four bolts removed from the back of the hub. I don't think I need to remove the stake nut, I was hoping I didn't anyway. Is it possible to pull the whole lot in one?.....I just need to let them out far enough so as I can remove the Diff....

You do not need to undo stake nut. plus gas on hub and rotate slightly each way to break rust seal. then use large heavy hammer and drift to knock hub outwards ,then rotate agail and repeat until removed. apply copperslip on rebuild to prevent rusting up again.

Thanks Tarphenry. So you are saying that it's actually rust welded to the CV housing. If I get it freed off, will the whole shaft including the CV joint and boot come out?......

Thanks for helping.

Yes, it is a total bar-steward. Lots of Plusgas and patience. I scored round the hub join with a bradawl, squirted in Plusgas, left to soak (cuppa!) and then loosen the 4 bolts and bang the 4 bolts, Plusgas, soak, loosen, bang ... you get the drift.

IIRC you only need to take the hub nut off if you're doing the CV boot. I wrote a How To but I think it is still on the waiting list.

Sounds like a bar steward alright.....Big difference to a classic or disco 1 simplicity. 5 minute job to pull the halfshaft on them. I can't even see a defined line between the hub and the housing. Sounds like big fun tomorrow. I just hope the offside is a little bit kinder.....
