just recently i had a similar thing to yours I had lots of back lash but I had a clunk when de accelerating ....when I dropped the oils on the diffs the front diff was full of metal... you can adjust the back lash in the diffs but if the diff housing is worn and the centre pin has been moving the diff housing is no good mine dollyed around that much the centre pin started to walk out lucky for me I checked the oil and magnetic drain plugWhile changing gearbox and transfer case noticed extreme play in my front diff. drive members are commonGuys (I think) thanks for the information. Diagnosis is an art... and unfortunately I can't paint. Will look at the front end this weekend. The year is 97 defender 110 MOD. Originally had the 2.5 with the Lt77.
