I have a 2005 freelander td4 which i bought earlier this year.
So i thought i would replace the brake pads as they were squeaking a bit.
Well....
Slides pins seized brake discs and pads heavily worn on one side. Everything is pretty much a rusty mess. So im now replacing all of it.

The disc shields are rotten. The bolts are rusted solid. I would replace with new ones. But it looks like its not possible without removing the hubs.

Are the disc shields really needed? Does anyone run without them?

Cheers!

Just cut them off. They're not really needed and aren't part of the MOT. ;)

I left one of mine off too - because you're right, you need to pop out the hub to do it.

If you have to replace the lower wishbone/ ball joint or change the ABS sensor, this would be the perfect time to do this job [replacing the dust shield]. Unfortunately I only realized this after putting everything back together - d'oh!

I'll complete the job properly sometime! But for now, I'm just enjoying the car :)

evidently .. new ones can be fitted without messing with the hub
just needs a small amount of material removing from them
( so sayeth a local LR techie / mechanic .. )

but it'll effect the rigidity of the assembly..
mmmmmm .. i'll take yer word for that :)
as in .. i didn't ask him for details ..

anyhow .. what are they for ???
is it to protect the discs from rock strike ? i.e. off road
they seem a bit surplus-to-requirement for a road vehicle

Their purpose is well described by their name - i.e. they're there to keep debris/ mud/ dust etc. off the discs. Not all mud etc, but may be reduce the shear amount...

Not exactly sure what they're for - I've heard they can be used to shield the gaiters and hoses from the hot disc, protect from mud and stones, etc.

Since I tend to buy older cars, all they seem to do is trap stones and make a worrying squeak, get bent and make the same noise, and half fall off and flap about.

On almost every car I've bought, I've been able to tear them off like you tear off the sticky film on a new electronic device. They never get replaced - I think even Sh*tpart ones and nearly £50 each!

i generally remove them as they are usually rotten and that side of disc is often worse than the non shielded side

that were my impression .. when i were messing about under the hippo .. painting ..
they felt a bit flimsy ..
on the other hand .. if they were super strong ( rigid ) .. solid crap between shield 'n disc
could end up screwing up the disc .. seizing the wheel .. not nice
so thin-ish semi-flexible shield safer maybe. (?)
