109 series lwb,. Just about to fit my stub axle and Backing Plates but not sure if the plates are sided or not, or does it not matter ?

Twin adjusters on brake plates so should not matter from what I can see but if you place one on a hub and look at the adjusters they should push shoe out so that adjuster edge is being applied by the drum when travelling forwards. Ie when drum contacts lesading edge of lining drum is pushing the shoe harder against drum known as self servo effect.
 
Turns out they are sided Left 246565 and Right 246566.
Got the drivers side on right I think in pic 1 as adjusters work as they should. Not sure about passenger side pic 2 as adjusters dont work think the cylinders want flipping round

Sorry no, i have the back axle off at the mo, should be able to move it in a few days , have a search on here twin leading shoes may get a pic
 
I once had a 109 that would pull to the left going forward and to the right when braked in reverse.:confused: Took a while before I found the problem. Two left hand backplates on front axle !!! :eek:o_O:rolleyes:
 
Here's some pics of some I had but opted to move on as at the time I was trialling and did not fancy poor brakes in reverse.
1st is rear of drivers side 2nd is front of drivers side and others passenger side note there is an indent in the back plates where the cylinders fit you should be able to check the orientatation from these.
I sold that set to a lad on another forum he fitted them with no issue.

Well this is a bloody nightmare, got the drivers side done adjusters work and got the drum on, I can adjust in and out to stop drum turning.
Passenger side looks to be right as its the same as blackburns pic, but I ended up rounding the bloody adjusters nuts off in temper.
So fitted to spares I have from one of those cheap kits, Anyway it is a lot better, both shoes turning on these new adjusters but just can not get one side far enough down to get the dam drum on so dont know whats gone wrong there.
Mind you Im getting a dab hand at getting shoes on and off :rolleyes: but still cant get this passenger side right yet.

Have you chamfered the leading edges of the brake shoes?
Have you fitted the correct shape cam to the adjuster? Looks like a SWB one to me.

Well got both adjuster to work, when they are adjusted in as far as they will go I can just say get the drum to slide on but it is very tight to turn. Will it wear in after time ? What do you mean by chamfered leading edges mate ?
 
Ends of brake linings top and bottom take a file to them to chamfer the edge reduces contact at that point.
Also worth checking they are not binding on the edges around the radius a bit of chalk on the outer edge then refit drum and see if it wears of as soon as you rotate them. Rust some times builds up on the drum inner edge around that area
Other thing is the adjustment of the steady post behind the shoe check it is only just making contact and not tipping the shoe a little.
 
The more I turn the drum it seems to get a little easier but still tight, will chamfer the edges tomorrow to see if that helps. Thanks.
Dreading doing the Rears
 
Your better off doing brakes on the vehicle as you can apply the brake to centralise the shoes
Will be a while before they are on vehicle to test but think I've or should I say we have got it for now, still gonna Shamfer edges off but should be ok. Once Again Thanks Everyone for help and advice
