Freeloader1 - can I change clutch without an engine hoist

Hi All

Freelander 1 facelift Td4 120K

Had new clutch, release bearing and DMF about 50K ago. Clutch started to slip yesterday so not sure which bit is knackered but it will need to all come out to check / replace.

I have done a few clutches on FWD cars but not the Freeloader. Am really skint at present so thinking of doing it on the drive to save the enormous labour costs. I have all the tools I need except an engine hoist. Can it be done without a hoist or will i need to hire / buy one?

You don't need a hoist but you'll need to support the engine from below with blocks.

The biggest problem i had was getting the gear box back on - its heavy and unwieldy - in the end i had to use a hoist to hold its weight whilst getting it into position - but i did do the job single handed with no help so maybe if the wife can support the weight of the gearbox whilst you line it up

I used to use a plank of wood that would fit over the engine bay with straps or rope tied round the gearbox when I used to change clutches. You can wind the rope around the wood to adjust the height

Cheers matey. Yes it does.

Been avoiding the job and using the car due to work but planning to do the clutch over a couple of weekends.

I wondered, are there other unrelated jobs i should do whilst doing the clutch like renew the thermostat?

Ill do a coolant change and probably the front pads and discs, as it eats them regularly.
