Hi folks,

New to this place, so be gentle with me.

First, a confession: I own a Rover 75, not a Freelander (sorry!). However, my Baby has taken to making a nasty knocking sound and I fear I may well be looking at an engine rebuild. The engine in question is a 2.0 KV6 and, on searching the 'net, I came across these folk: https://www.freelanderspecialist.com/ .They seem to do everything I need, and have replied to my e-mails in a friendly and timely manner. They also seem to attract favourable reviews on their Facebook page. However, not having dealt with them before, I thought I would see if they are well known within the Freelander community. So, finally, my question:

Does anyone here have any experience of Sue & Nobert (the folk running Freelanderspecialists.com) and are they considered a "safe pair of hands"? I'm sure they are, but would appreciate any views,

I don't know that company but your knocking noise might be the main pully buffer thingy. It went on our 75 and sounded really bad. The local garage fixed it for about £120

Thanks. Current thinking is that the knocking may be coming from the main bearings, so I've sent an oil sample off for analysis before delving much further. I guess I'm just looking at worse case scenario.

Reading back my post I have to admit you do have a point! It'a genuine question though, and I really have had no dealings with them (other than a couple of e-mails). By way of background, I've owned my '75 for some 13 yrs now and have been a member of the 75 & ZT owners club since its inception. The '75 is very much my baby - she has won a number of shows and was on display at the NEC Classic Car Show back in 2017. She's been poorly for a couple on months now, and I really just want her back to her best. I can get a 2nd hand engine quite easily, but the car is a "keeper", so I'm quite happy to spend whatever is necessary, even though the cost of a rebuild will probably outstrip the cars market value. I just need to be certain that whoever does the work is capable and trustworthy.

Is this the place that claims to recondition VCU's and IRD's? If so, check out one of the sticky posts at the top of the Freelander section.

What was it that you need?
 
In my experience, you're better off getting a lower mileage second hand engine, instead of over paying for a potential time bomb of a rebuild.
 
Thanks. I know what you mean - that's why I was asking for any experiences of the company's work. The car in question is a "show car" and I'd like to keep the original engine if possible, but I'm wary of potential future problems if things aren't done right.

I can rebuild your current engine. I have a low mileage internals in storage, which I was keeping for a project, which isn't going ahead now.
 
I don't have any experience directly of them, but have found comments and their info useful and correct on their website , that doesn't help with using them for actual work, if you think you'd like to use them, ask for a couple of customers contact details who they've done similar work for and see what they think of them ..as well as perhaps go see them in person and ask for a look around the workshop while they are working on an engine ..
 
That's some sensible advice there, many thanks.
I really wish they were nearer, it's a good 2.5 - 3 hrs drive to them, but so far I haven't found anyone locally offering similar services specialising in the KV6 who seem trustworthy. I guess though, if I'm thinking of spending big money, one day out for a visit is time well spent. Also, taking up references is something I really should have thought of, but hadn't, so thanks for that :)
