Hi All,

I am looking to buy a freelander at present, but am looking at an LPG model due to running costs.

I went to view one last night, 1998 5dr version with 85,000 on the clock - it also has a sequential lpg system fitted to it.

it seemed to be in reasoneable nick for the year with full service histroy up to 66,000 since then there is a gap however. From what I could see the prblematic headgasket has never been changed, and neither has the cam belt

Test drove it and it seemed fine, no major knocks or bangs - only thing is that the clutch made a slight squeak when it was operated.

I told him i would think about it, he was asking £1700 for it - reduce from 2100 which is what he listed it at - does this sound like a reasoneable price ? From parkers etc.. they were saying 1300 tops, but that obviously does not account for the LPG - the fitting looked very neat, and ran very smoothly (the guy selling it was a former LPG installer and said that the parts alone cost him 900 trade)

I am hesitant to get it, as I know that it will cost me a few hundered to do the gasket and cam belts. I just really need to know if this is a good deal or not, or if i should be looking at a lower price ?

Thanks

Ian

What engine??

if the 1.8K series Then You don't want it if he's giving it away.

I'd suggest you have a look at the freelander faults poll on this forum. for a very comprehensive list of things that go wrong with freelanders and the petrol engined varients in particular

its the 1.8 petrol yes - i have had a good look into the faults, hence asking if this was a reasonalbe price considering the LPG - but also the need to replace the HG and cam belts ASAP

he would only go down to 1700 on it, he does seem to be selling for genuine reasons, he is emigrating with his family (tommorow) he even showed me the plane tickets ! so i tihnk the price is more a reflection of wanting to get rid, but he said if it didnt sell he was asking his neighbour to try and sell it for him and send the money over - i offered 1300 knowing about issues and he turned it down - but now I am thinking having looked at similar vehicles on ebay that the price wasnt too bad - the other lpg one i was looking at with uprated HG and new belts / alternator / dizzi etc.. went for 1750, but that had 128 on the clock !

You don't want a k-series and you definately don't want one with an LPG conversion on it. I don't understand why people keep asking if they should buy one. Get a diesel freelander1 or get a different vehicle.

Strikes me as sequential hgf and he doen't want to spend **** all on it, that's why the pile of **** is as it is and him emigrating =**** all comeback.

I was expecting that :)

I have to admit not to owning a Landrover with a K series, but I have owned K-series engined cars for the last 13 years and had very few problems.

I started with a Metro GTI, then a GTa, a 1.1s when I was at uni, a Rover 214, Rover 75 and currently an MG TF 160.

I guess I have done nearly 200,000 miles in all of those and only suffered one headgasket failure on the 214 at 92,000 miles and that was due to a leaking radiator that popped on the motorway - If I had replaced it there wouldnt have been an issue - it ran to over 140,000 after being fixed with no problems.

I look after my cars and check the coolant, oil etc every week and any drop in fluid is quickly spotted and fixed before it brings other issues. I still have my TF and for the past two years driven it to the Italian lakes and back with not a hint of an issue and will be doing the same this year!

In regards to LPG - my father in law has a 1.8 MG ZS and its currently done 110,000 miles and is running fairly well. His car does seem to have sporadic stalling problems on LPG though and it sometimes runs a notch hotter on the temperature gauge - its always done it but not sure if its causing any long term damage

Even with the reliable diesel engines, the Freelander still isn't the most reliable car in the world. Imo, you're just asking for trouble when you stick a 1.8 LPG conversion into the equation.

It will be hard to find a good TD4 for £1700. But for a little more, you should be able to find an L-series diesel model.

read on here somewhere that LPG conversions accelerate HGF. Think the MHM posted something about it.

The K series (and the 1.8 in particular) have a propensity for HGF. That dont mean they all will, but the odds are very much stacked against you. It is a known fact that LPG does not have the same cooling effect as a liquid fuel and burns hotter. Add that to an engine which has known "hot spots" and a likeness for cavitation in the cooling system and you are just asking for trouble.
I would also point out that "i look after my car and check water level an temp gauge regularly" doint count for jack **** with a 1.8 hippoo. Some the most respected and technically competant members on here such as Trewy and Widget have suffered at the hands if a Freelander. If they can be caught out then anyone can. If you like seeing your vehicle in bits then go ahead. Dont think "it cant happen to me - You have been warned!
