Battery issue
Report post
Hello me again
Very Happy

I have an issue with battery usage.
I don’t use my car much it can be stood for a week or more between uses so I got a solar powered trickle charger which I have plugged into the 12v socket all the time the car isn’t being used.
The problem is the trickle charger seems to be damaging my battery I’ve had to buy 2 new batteries in the past year at £180 each.
Is there anything I can fit or have fitted to keep my battery charged but not overcharged when not in use?
TIA
Rob

If there's no charge controller between the solar panel and battery, the voltage will climb high enough to boil the battery.
Even a cheap Chinese £10 charge controller will prevent battery damage. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/37594639...qCiXAEoa1Zv-E8YObLVtwW8Ar7EcPrlMaAiI_EALw_wcB

I used to make kits for solar charge controllers, but couldn't compete with the Chinese stuff, so I stopped selling them.

Agreed.

We have (relatively) big panels on our campers (340w) and they kick out quite a lot of power when the conditions are right and although we replace the house batteries every 3 years, the starters that they also charge last double that. The controllers stop the batteries being cooked.

hi
thanks for the replies.
according to the manual for my solar trickle charger
'This trickle charger will NOT overcharge your battery! '
its a 2.5w 12v panel plugged into the 12v socket in the centre console.
the garage that do my service said the battery was at 4% so i bought another one
just wondered if its the trickle charger damaging the battery or something else?

Yet you keep getting damaged batteries……

Are you double locking the vehicle? ie. Pressing the key fob twice to immobilise the car and shutdown the multiplicity of computers on board. Simply locking the car with one press of the fob is not enough if the car is to be left for a week.
Use of even a cheap pwm charge controller is essential. Doesn't matter what the solar panel supplier says, the voltage will keep climbing long after the battery is fully charged. My low wattage battery maintainer solar panel output will go to 17v, enough to wreck a battery, given time.

for real? is that a freelander thing? my rr will go to sleep even if i dont lock it at all, double lock just deadlocks the doors so they can't be opened from inside

There is definitely still a drain on the battery after one click of the fob which reduces after two. My FL2 is a 2007 model, perhaps they re-programmed things on later models.
