I m looking at buying a Freelander 2003 1.8 petrol.I have a IW horse trailer 510 and altho not intending to tow it with my 600 kg horse can you tell me if it will be heavy enough(the freelander) to hitch up the trailer and practiceloading and unloading the horse?Also will it tow the trailer while empty?

Towing capacity is I think about 1900Kg, so the box and horse would be around 300 below that. Unladen the box is about a 1000Kg? Should be fine to tow without the horse inside the box, but personally I would use a diesel one for the job, or something a bit bigger like a Disco if you want comfort or a Defender if you love being cold.

avoid buying a petrol freelander no matter how good it appears to be, unless you think you could break it and make a profit on the parts that is.

My query was loading my horse,not towing as I have a Nissan Terrano 2.7 for that!Its the training of loading I am asking about!
Was the note about never buying a petrol Freelander ,just about towing or was it a general comment?

Read too much bad press about 1.8 petrol Freelanders - Just DONT do it !

Your post said you didn't intend to tow it laden, but you wanted to know the limits of a Freebie. Those you now have and you can make a decision.

To recap:
Yes it would be capable of being used to practice loading up a horse.
Yes it would be able to tow the box unladen.
Advice would be to look for a diesel one though as it could pull the guts out of the motor.
The K series unit is not as bad as the shriekers will have you believe but you would need to take care finding a good one.

avoid the 1.8 petrol like the plague, it will give you nothing but trouble!

Don't go near a 1.8 Freelander, it's probably had a couple of engines already and the head gasket going is about as probable as Christmas!
