I have a Freelander 1 - 1.8 petrol - 1999.
I have fitted a new clutch.....and all Gearbox bearings (3)........and i've just changed the Transfer box.
BUT THE DAMN THING STILL HAS A WHINE on it.

It's driving me crackers - 3 major components of the vehicle and it's making the same noise as before i changed the transfer box. It has all brand new Gearbox oil & Transmission oil. Must admit it changes gear better but i can't find this whine.
The prop has been removed and the transfer box has been plated off but still i have this issue.
Has anybody had this kind of trouble or can anybody troubleshoot this problem.

I really am seriously thinking of getting rid before i throw more hard earned cash at it.
TYIA.

Rear diff, although unlikely without any drive going through it. Wheel bearings can whine sometimes. Is it only when moving, or is it there when the engine is running?

If it's only running as a FWD, you'r better off just using it. Most of the value is lost, now it's not a 4WD.

I'm thinking it may be a wheel bearing as if i try and do say 65-70mph and then slow down it rumbles as i stop and then when i try to set off

As you know it's a lot of work changing the gearbox but as there are so many K series cars in the scrappers they should be pretty cheap.

Jack up each wheel in turn and hold onto the spring while you give it a spin. You should feel the rumble of a bad wheel bearing.
Not so simple with a 4WD, if you only jack up one wheel your fighting the VCU.
My mate was having a problem with a bearing noise from the front of his Freelander and we couldn't hear the problem with the wheels jacked up. He thought it was the drive shaft so even though I said it wasn't we replaced it and the problem was still there. Unfortunately I never got to the bottom of the issue as he sold it but I suspect the IRD was involved.

True, but this chap’s removed his prop.

I’ve just discovered my left rear bearing was just about dropping off! I never even noticed a rumble. I replaced it today without too much fuss, thankfully. It was a newer type, with a magnetised side for the ABS sensor.

Are you sure your abs will work with the newer bearings if it had the old type bearing or did it .
Just done a two-hour journey and no ABS light - it’s newer type, anyway. I guess the newer bearing would work with the older systems, as that relies on a reluctor ring on the driveshaft

Not too bad a job, anyway. The old and new bearings knocked out and in fairly easily. Worst part was the rusty bolts holding the hub in. Lots of back and forth, with plenty of oil and a wire brush helps.

Injury count: 1 skinned knuckle and a small bruise where I headbutted the wheelarch. Both happened simultaneously.

Always apply force to the ratchet such that you would fall away from, not into, the car if something slipped. ;)
