Freelander v6 reverse gear stopped working

Hi,

My 2002 freelander v6 is not reversing: Had the car to workshop for rear camshaft seal replacement. After repairs, refilled new AT oil (4l) and all gear worked fine except reverse gear engaging with low power. Tried to increase revs on reverse with hand brake applied and finally after a short ride, reverse worked as in neutral gear: car not reversing anymore.
Added extra 1l of AT oil, but still no changes. Some mechanics said gearbox damaged but still no fault/codes found on transmission scan. Even the check engine is not illuminating on dash board.
I wonder: is it sufficient to refill only with 4l if i assume the torque converter was opened and gearbox drained? Do i need to refill with 8.5l to have the reverse gear working? (someone said it should be 8.5l for refill from dry for auto jatco gearbox). what could be the cause of that?
Any suggestion/idea WELCOMED to help.

if he has I remember reading a post on here where a garage had done the same thing to a members car and they drilled another hole in sump to gain access to fix their mistake

yu would have thought after 15 years, peeps would know how to do the job properly :eek:.

You would be surprised how many make the same mistake, and still do. Garage professionals and home diy. I still get a steady stream of peeps with the same problem. You would think peeps would look up the instructions on the web. The v6 accounted for approx. 25% of Freelander 1 production during the years it was available. Outside of Europe they were very popular.

Wrong bolt undone when draining the fluid. The reverse brake band retaining bolt has been removed. It is potentially possible to get it back into position from outside the box, by fishing onto the correct place, like in the link. It's a real pita to do though.

Thanks for your advice. I tried to replace the gearbox with an used one yesterday. Everything was ok, gears changing well.Something strange: after a ride (almost 10km),i parked the car and when i wanted to drive, the car not moving forward but reverse gear works fine.
Something is wrong and this time i checked no wrong bolt removed. What could i do?
 
Possibly the gear selector arm is incorrectly fitted, there is a special tool to align this.
When checking the oil level the engine should be running when you remove the level plug (on the base of the box) let excess oil come out or add oil until oil dribbles out.
Or give it to a transmission specialist to sort it.

The gearbox fluid level must only be checked when the temperature of the fluid is between 35° and 45°. The reading obtained will be incorrect if the fluid is outside this temperaturerange.

The Jatco gearbox is a complex item that requires a good degree of knowledge to service and maintain correctly. Simply throwing another unknown gearbox in the car, doesn't gain the required knowledge to keep it working correctly. You must use the correct fluid. The fluid level needs to be carefully set, with the box at the correct temperature. Deviating outside the service procedure, will cause issues like you have.
 
Also the TPM and automatic transmission must be compatible (due to the speed sensor removal at one point in time, if needed I can dig up my previous post where we found the exact partnumber). What year was your own Freelander and what year what the Freelander that donated the transmission ?
