iv recently become a first time land rover owner following the purchase of my freelander 2005 sport.

Now iv purchased all filters and oil to give her a good service which ill be doing as soon as they arrive, but i just come stuck with the issue of tyres.

one of the tyres has a nail in it and the spare looks a little bold so i decided to call a tyre place who informed me that freelanders need to have the same tyre on all four wheels. apparently this is because the IRD will be under stress from different treads etc...

Is this true?

At the minute i have the front drivers side and the front passengers side with Fullrun tyres on and the back passenger side a continental and the rear passenger side with supersteel.

If i was to replace the back tyres with Fullrun tyres would that make the freelander ok tyre wise or does it need to be that they all need to be the same tyre and the same tread depth?

thanks

Dear god an honest tyre seller!!!! Stick with them, they just potentially saved you thousand of pounds and grief!

Yes they are absolutely right. There can be a little difference in wear (1mm or so) just make sure the tyres with slightly more tread go on the back, and they must always be the same make model and size. The safest bet is to get four new ones together and then rotate them ever 1000 miles or so which makes sure that tread wear is totally uniform.

Corr can't believe that, you're lucky to have such a knowlegable retailer there fella.

Will :).

retate every 1000 miles?

that often?

whats the best way to rotate? literally take the tyres of and move around or literally just move the wheels about?

Leave the tyres on the wheels, swap wheels front to back/back to front ;) :)

ah that makes sense..doh

so. now i need to decide what tyre.

the car is basically a road car which occasionally pulls a caravan. pratically no off roading.

iv search for the perreli scorpion ATS but i cant find them in the 235/50/r18 size needed.

any reccomendations?

It's not a Bank Holiday is it? :flame2:

You can't go far wrong with any premium brand tyre. Pirelli is the favourite here but you can do just as well with other. I would probably go for one of the Continental road tyres if not scorpions, they look very good.

Damn! Just ordered two new Michelins for the front, as worn. Good job I checked as had it my head new tyres went to front!
So shall I get the new michelins put on back and the wranglers put on front..... or just get him to order me two more michelins?
Very paranoid about this as made the mistake last year (put new on front!) and knackered the whatiscalled IRD/VCU? Ended up getting a recon one from Barr Propshafts..... Husband away and don't want to get it wrong!!
NB: Heard the wranglers were not so good hence the make change..

if you can afford it buy four, if not you'll have to go on the rolling radius of the tyres.
measure the circumference of all four and put the largest radius on the rear.
