Afternoon all
Need to source a replacement Transfer box for 99 Series 1 Freelander 2.0 Td4
Engine Type 20T2N

1st question does it differ from the BMW type engine, see plenty 2nd around but none specific for the Rover engine.

Any help greatly appreciated

Need to get it shipped over to Italy asap
Cheers
John

Yours is a L-series if it is a 99-model. You can fit a transfer box from TD4, K-series as well as from the L-series. But you should try to find one newer than ca 2001 because of new ratios.

They're all the same I believe bar the v6, TAG000230 or something like that.

I can supply new for £950 inc vat + delivery

Early ones are different to late. I read on a thread a week or 2 ago that there was 7 different types?

Copied from a well known online LR parts supplier...

If the Land Rover Freelander 1 has the 1.8 Litre K-Series petrol engine, the 2.0 Litre L-Series or later BMW Td4 diesel engine, then part number TAG000230 is required. If the vehicle has the 2.5 Litre V6 petrol engine, then part number TAG000220 will be needed instead.

May be different ratios in the later one, but all new ones are likely to be with the later ratios anyway, but the design/casing is exactly the same

Tbh that would make more sence. But getting and ird second hand I am sure it will be a minefield what is what

I never knew you could fit a later td4 ird to l series. Might have to look into that

Yeah buying a used IRD is just asking for trouble, given the number of hours taken to replace one, it could be an expensive trial and error.

Thats why I'm supplying Lukas (winu) with a brand new one, he gets a warranty and a bit more confidence, his car was on its first one, 200,000km, 14yrs old, not bad really! New one should last the same!

Mines done 155k miles and still going. I have started to think about keeping one in the shed for just in case

I have to disagree with you on this one Simon. If you can fit the IRD yourself and you have a proper new VCU(that wont screw up your "new" IRD) you can buy/fit 3 used IRD's before youre coming close to paying for a new one.

Winu is addicted to shiny things thats why he needs a new one :D

Haha I guess it depends how good the used IRD is really :D

Thanks guys.
I'm stuck in the situation that the current IRD is beyond salvation, the the case is cracked, and crown wheel and pinion are worn and chipped. Looks like a seal went and lost all its oil. The guy using it heard strange sounds but didn't think to get it checked.
I can't afford to spend £1K plus fitting and delivery.

I've found one for £320 including delivery from a 2005 Freelander.
Somebody mentioned something about the ratio's being different, is this a problem ?

Cheers Guys in the Know !!!

If its an L series the ratio's shouldn't be a problem, as the ratio's were "improved" on later ones.

Even a recon IRD is £834 from Bristol Transmissions, so as long as the condition of that one you've found is good, thats probably your best bet!

yeah, like shiny and princely :D

And, VCU, and prop, and... oh whatever

Not a problem, it will be better, but new type of rear diff should be fitted too. (large bearings)

If the case is cracked, the price of reconditioned units work out higher because you won't get any money back on your old unit (so the reconditioner can recondition it). It makes new or used more attractive. If you get a used one and then it goes, you can then exchange that one for a reconditioned unit.

Delivery to Italy may not be too much, but further afield the delivery cost, and return exchange delivery, makes 'whole' new or reconditioned units even more expensive. I chose to have a reconditioning kit (bearings, seals & heat exchanger) shipped from the UK and the bits fitted locally.

The best price I could get for a replacement new IRD here was $3,800 - thats just shy of 2,000UKP and I couldn't find any reconditioned ones over here. The prices for VCUs was similarly 2 x UK. The cost of living for Landie owners in NZ can get rather high!

There are quite a few Freelanders on the road here, but the Landie specialists are not keen on supporting them, they're more into Series trucks & Discos.

£1k is quite an expensive just in case!

It is a lot of money. That's why it's better to plan when's the best time to spend it rather than it just be sprung on you....like my headgasket this week. A £400 bill is hard to swallow a week before payday

My second hand ird at £150 inc vat will do me nicely- just finished fitting it and a gearbox which cost me £65 inc vat and delivery.........

Labour was free cuz I don't charge myself....

Leaves me a good ird casing to rebuild as and when I have time. :D
