Ours is only a small living of 2m x 2m:)

Ooppsss need to mention the horse gets treated better and has 2m x 4m to stretch out in :)
Glad to hear you are getting tooled up they will get used. But plenty of help here when you need it.

Small but perfectly formed. Maybe snuggle up with the horse? :)

Before you sort out the engine power, you should have a read of...

If there's anything needs sorting there, its of the highest priority!

The Freelander should be able to tow that van no problems, I've bought a SSW 109 home on a transporter trailer before - its got to be lighter than that! Also busted a wheel off a commercial trailer because I overloaded it - but the Freelander shifted it - till the wheel fell off! Mine's an L series which is pretty comparable to the TD4.

It doesn't sound as though the car is that "unhealthy". I don't know much about the TD4, but it might be something simple like a loss of vacuum dues to a perished hose meaning the turbo isn't kicking in. Others may know more.

Yer mistaken there. I've towed several P38's, tratters and a disco. All of them were sh*te.

Fingers crossed you will have a fantastic time. We upgraded from camping. It's so nice just to.pitch up with electric and heating. Hopefully the weather will be kind to you

If weather's cack it's not as bad as being in a tent with the kids. We hope anyway.

R.e clutch slip, try pulling away in 1st and flooring it, if clutch slips it'll rev like feck for a bit before clutch bites

Thank you for the information. The VCU is fine and the tyres are all good and inflated properly and to the same pressure. I'm hoping it's a perished hose causing loss of turbo power. I'm hoping it's not a dodgy clutch. I'll go down to get diagnostics done and see what that throws up. I'll do some simple clutch tests tomorrow to see if it's slipping.
I really appreciate people taking time to respond. Thanks guys

Sure its not the clutch - surely driver would have noticed that car and van going nowhere but the engine was revving its nuts off.

...and...

There's no better thing than camping in the rain.

Digging trenches round the tent is character building.

Funnily enuff, that's the last time I got Mrs Grumpy to go camping!

Dogman mentioned "clutch slip"? What are the signs of clutch slip? I do have to press the clutch down hard to engage gears
Clutch slip is when the clutch slips because it's worn. When yer drive it normally power is passed though the clutch. what goes in comes out. If yer make the Freelander work harder by towing something (like a snail house) or ask it to drive at high speed, then the clutch may not pass all the power because it's worn. Hence yer get loss of power because it slips. Not everything going it comes out. Yer normally get a burning smell if the clutch is slipping.

I would be checking all the air hoses around the engine to see if they have pressure when it's running if it were mine. Also look fer damage like small holes. Be careful where yer put yer fingers when the engine is running.

:pIs that Mrs Grumpy in the dry barn behind you?

I doubt it is as well but easy to test on a sunday when garage is shut. Not to mention having a good poke around under the bonnet.

Funnily enough last time Mrs Smith camped we had a violent thunderstorm overnight. No flooding but nothing like feeling the thunderclaps are in the tent with you to put the better half off character building :D

Shame really kids love camping. I'll keep the tent for when us lads want to rough it for a weekend :)

Thank you Hippo! I'll check the hoses tomorrow, check pressures and any obvious damage. I'll try to keep my sausage fingers out of the way. Got a few spare if all goes wrong o_O

Well I've towed a 2 berth caravan this year with a F1 v6 and its hard work-I was thinking of changing to a F1 diesel auto but now I'm having second thoughts☹️
This car is new to the OP and there is something, maybe quite minor, wrong with this car's motor. Don't take it in isolation. I just did a search in the Freelander section for "td4 caravan". There are various problems, as you would expect in any forum for any vehicle, but there are a lot of people more than happy with their TD4's capability pulling a shed.

The VCU is fine
Have you done the one wheel up test to check it?
and the tyres are all good
Are all the tyres identical, same make, same type, with least worn on the rear?
I'm hoping it's a perished hose causing loss of turbo power
Replace all the vac pipes, as they are known to perish.
Also clean out the inlet manifold of the accumulation of goop. If those don't improve things, then test the MAF by unplugging it. If the power improves, then replace the MAF with a new Bosch item.

The V6 is fine for towing, just as good as the TD4. The only thing you need to remember is keep the engine revs up. The KV6 produces maximum torque at 4,000 Rpm, so it needs to revved, to get the best out of it.
The TD4 has no more torque, it just peeks at a lower Rpm that's all. Oh and uses less fuel too.

Thank you Nodge. One wheel up test already done, tyres are identical size, make, inflated. I'll have a look at the hoses later today and take it from the there.
Thank you for all your help, it very much appreciated.
