@MollyNomad..... From your avatar (assuming it is you), do you, have you work with training dogs?
I seem the recognise the suit. :D
Yes, I my Burton's suit(weddings , my Primark suit(funerals) for my Avatar.. Photo was take take a training facility in South Wales...al my clients clients clients from here. Sometimes you have to get bit...

LEDs in standard filament lights are currently a bit of a grey area. But I can see legislation arriving soon that will outlaw there use, just as HID are outlawed. However HID upgrades still seem to get into "boy racer'' headlights and go unnoticed. Imho, having most of the light leave the reflectors uncontrolled seems a massive waste of light output. My conventional halogen bulbs put much more light on the road, than these HIDs do, simply because the HID light is too diffused to light the road correctly.

Completely agree :)
Any vehicle with Xenon/LED conversions fitted to a standard halogen lamp unit should fail MOT - as regs state, if fitted, they are required to have self leveling and headlamp cleaning systems.
The LED bulbs I trialed did give a much better light output than any of the Halogens I'd tried, but as you say the beam was extremely diffused.
I've switched back to Halogen bulbs for now, whilst I'm still fitting LED's into projectors in my other lamps.

I'm not anti LED headlights. I think that LED as a light source is amazing. Factory LED lights don't actually require cleaning systems like HID. Many new cars now have multi element LEDs fitted as standard, without cleaning systems. I do find that factory LEDs do produce more dazzle to on coming drivers, simply because the light is so diffused. I would think that as the the technology improves, so will the beam control.

I think high output LEDs in main beam reflectors are ok and should pass the MOT.
For dips, at the moment, the light source is to large. This means beam control is poor, with lots of bleed into unintended area's.

Regards LED's in general(in motoring applications) I also read in another classic car magazine that LED's fitted to any light cluster(I was thinking of installing them on the rear of my Jag) would be deemed illegal. Read this a couple of years back and it ****ed me off no end. Dunno what for as my Jag is stuck in a lockup in southern England and hasn't turned a wheel in nearly 10 years!! :-S

Big Brother is alive and well and lives in Brussels....and maybe London..somewhere??

Wow, didn't realise there is an auto censor function on this site..does that mean we can just spout off and not worry about the consequences??

I used to be a prison officer dog handler so have had many a bite in my time. :D
Did my initial course at Bridgend police in South Wales many years ago.

And it's back to repairs...

Seems my High Pressure Fuel Pump has had enough of pumping fuel to the injectors and it wants to pump it onto the floor instead!

Special tool and Bosch seal kit ordered... Joy Joy :)

Hi Rob

Any symptons before hand or did it just 'go'??

Hi Rob

Yes - There was a small puddle under the car where it had been parked before I took the trip.

I had noticed the puddle, however there was often a puddle under the car recently due to using the air-con in the warm weather... so I thought noting of it.

Looks like it had probably been leaking for a few days then decided to give up on the motorway!

Special tool and Seal kit will hopefully arrive today so I can get cracking :)

We are back on the road!

And here's the culprit -

Pump Seals.JPG

The "common" issue apparently.
I didn't take loads of photos as it was a messy job; but this ones enough.

Cost me just under £60 in total and a few hours work.
£33 + £5 postage for the special tool to align and remove the pump.
£21.25 inc. postage for the Bosch seal kit from Breedon and Gell.

Fingers crossed for a bit of trouble free motoring...

Rob

I don't think you are right here. If you have self leveling suspension and/or headlamp cleaners then these must be working to pass an MOT after a Xenon/LED conversion. At least that was the ruling a few years ago - I checked with my MOT centre before doing the conversion on a jag x-type - inspector told me the washers had to work, but I didn't need to fit self levelling suspension.

Think that means self levelling headlights? ......They do exist....Drive cars that have that system every day...

Great!
Any chance of a 'How To' and a link to where you got the parts?

Yep, you're right - I was thinking of the suspension components needed for some (all maybe?) cars for the self levelling lights to work - need to engage brain before typing :)

Normally done with a height sensor from chassis to a suspension arm front and rear and this data is then used to move the headlights up and down as required - relatively simple system but tough to make a homemade version I think without some electronics knowledge
