Hi everyone, hoping that you may be able to help, we bought a freelander (2001) td4 last weekend, has been running fine on long trips and short ones, however this morning i did the short drive to my horse (approx 1-2 minute drive) and when i turned off the engine there was a loud sort of fan noise coming from the battery side of the engine bay, this lasted a few minutes. Car sat for about half an hour and then i did the short drive home and the same thing happened again and i think i saw some steam/smoke coming from that area aswell. I have read about the fuel burning heater but my worry is that its not a particularly cold day (12 degrees) and i didnt have the heating switched on which some other posts mention. Any ideas? Ive done this short journey before in this car on colder mornings and had no problems! worried as we have only had it a week!

Hi,
Absolutely no need to worry. This indeed is the fuel burning heater which operates completely automatically as an aid to get the engine to working temp as soon as possible. Lots of new owners are worried about the noise / the smoke / the smell but it is exactly how the thing is meant to work.

It may come on at any time as the sensors demand it to. Mine sometimes even turns on for a short time in the summertime.

You get used to it. Ignore it. Time to worry is when it doesn't do what you have seen or heard.

I've had this system on all my Freelanders for 10 years or more and get comments and questions from people who see the smoke in car parks etc.

Great fun going into your local Tesco and then hearing your reg on the tannoy with the comment , " Come quickly - your car may be on fire."

Enjoy your Freelander.

sorry to add this message here but I joined this morning and can not work out how to post my own message requesting advice can ANYONE please help
THanks

you should look for icon saying "New Thread" in the Freelander section.. or the others in the zoo start biting.

Thats a big relief many thanks for getting back to me! I was just concerned as we had not heard it all week!
