freelander td4 engine change becuase of blue smoke

hi all new to this group just after some help and tips if anyone has any on changing the engine on my td4, Im only changing the engine if i have, as oil got blown out of the dip stick as i think the crank breather was blocked but no sure, also as result i think the turbo seals have gone as when i changed the crank case beather i removed inlet manifold, egr, and intercooler pipes and cleaned them up drove around the block and oil in the intercooler pipes again. but if i disconnect the intercooler pipe and start the car from cold i get little blue smoke then clears and will be fine on idle but when i rev at 2000 rpm and hold it there blue smoke starts coming out the back and feels like a miss fire all this with the intercooler pipe off it the same with it on, but just saying its the same on or off. the missfire is worse from cold once warmed up you cant feel it. if anyone has any ideas what this may be would be a help, i have brought another engine but if i can fix this one i wont have to change it, but worst case if i do can i lift the engine out through the bonnet or does it have to come out from underneath?
 
oil in the turbo pipes is normal as long as there is not too much why don't you take them off and clean them out along with you inlet pipes and see what it is like then
 
hi thanks for the reply i have taken off all pipes and inlet and the egr cleaned all so there like new put back together drove round the block again got back was smokey again left it to idle all cleared but as soon as you rev up to 2000 rpm it still smoked, so i took the front top intercooler pipe where the sensor is and it had oil poles in all the places it could not the normal mist coating. so i think the turbo seals have defo gone. but my bigger concern is i cleaned all pipes up again and left the intercooler pipe off this time but it still smoked but i think it was alittle less. any ideas
 
It's fine cleaning the intercooler hoses etc.. but what about the intercooler itself?
I bought an audi A4 with a kn4ckered turbo for the grand total of 200 quid... replaced the turbo, but took the intercooler off the car.... i must have drained out half a gallon of oil... i ended up leaving the intercooler draining for about 3 days before refitting. - in some cases, the oil in the intercooler can cause the engine to actually "run-on" until the oil has been burned off. also... depending on how bad the seals have gone, the exhaust may have traces of oil in it too - which needs a good hard run down the dual carriage way or motor way to burn off.
 
hi thanks for the reply ok i will give the intercooler a gd clean out see if that helps whats the best way to take it off? this is the bit i dont understand as i said above i cleaned inlet and pips again but left the top intercooler pipe off on idle it will be fine nothing coming out the back but under load about 2000rpm the blue smoke would come out the back and thats with the intercooler pipe of bypassing the intercooler itself. im just thinking would the oil come out the exhaust side of the turbo and cause the smoke? but wouldnt it smoke all the time intill burnt off? but with my car from 2000rpm and smoking if i release the throttle and let it idle wait 15 to 20 second and it would all clear. im really out of ideas to try i think it would just be easier too just change the engine what do you think?
 
There's little need to change the engine for a possible failed turbo. It's very unusual for the exhaust housing seal to contaminate the exhaust gasses. It normally runs oil out of the exhaust.
First thing I'd do is remove the intercooler and clean it internally with something like petrol. Give it a good soak and slosh about, repeated a couple of times.
If the smoking returns, I'd be replacing the turbo.
 
Hi there mine has blue spoke if you hold the throttle at around 2000rpm also feels like a slight misfire but i dont notice it when i;m driving it , been told its an injector playing up, but untill it gets worse i will leave well alone as it goes like a train regularly towing 1500 kgs, after all how often do you drive along holding 2000 revs .Also does smoke have a diesely smell.

hi thank for the reply ok i will take the intercooler out and give it a good clean and at the same time might as well do the intel and pipes again as they will have oil in them. whats the best and easiest way to get the intercooler off? worst case i do have a complete engine with everything and runs good that i got for £100 lol
 
Try a compression test , white smoke is unburnt fuel that could be lack of compression, hence why you are getting blue smoke to, if you are just getting blue smoke on start up only then that will be valve stem oil seals
 
Just like to say I had exactly the same problem and to date I've had the head totally rebuilt, 4 new injectors, new maf sensor, new cat, recon turbo and no fault codes coming up and the thing still smokes and miss fires at around 2000rpm my mechanic has had it for 7 weeks now and can't find the answer to this problem.
I've ordered a new fuel rail pressure sensor harness and that is the next thing to try if this fails then I'm going to buy a box of matches and turn it into a winter bbq
 
I'd agree with cleaning the intercooler first. You need to remove the front bumper to get to it and also remove the bolt from the AC condenser top left so that you can access one of the securing bolts; three altogether. Good luck!. There will be a fair bit of oil in there, but like every one else who has posted suggests you will still get some oil mist in the pipework. It's the nature of the beast really!
 
hi thanks for all the replys. well i have now cleaned out the intercooler and all the pipes and intel manifold put all back and still smoking so i think im going to just change the engine with the new one i brought but i just went over to get the engine of my mate and i managed to end up buying the whole car for £400 lol its an 02 plate 3 door td4 with 97,000 miles engine is perfect but the auto box had stopped working, im just wondering if it would be better to fix the auto box instead, it stopped working when on the way to have its mot done and it started to struggle getting up the hill and when you come to a stop it would stop working but it used to work again if you switch it off and back on again it would work alittle but come to a stop and it would stop working again but now when you start put into any gear it does nothing. what could the problem be with the box? if it going to cost too much i will just change the engines over.
 
hi there i got my auto freelander today so set out the change the turbos over but when taken apart my turbo the when with blue smoke im not sure is the turbo has gone or not as there isnt alot of oil around or in the turbo. the pic of the cold air in had oil in it but the oil is coming from the breather pipe that gos to the rocker cover i think. what do you gays think has it gone or not?

Does it feel sluggish as well? Have you replaced The MAF Sensor? I would do this befor pulling anything really expensive off. If you know someone with a working TD4 borrow their MAF and see if this solves the problem before spending big bucks.
