Update...... started it up in the morning coolant level still at maxium (was still liquid so could coolant) left it runing for 40mins & checked on it etc opened it up looked with a torch cant see nothing........... the coolant bootle does seem to have some fractures on it around the cap (cap looks new)...

I want to replace bootle is this something easy to do & where can you get one have looked on ebay but can only find second hand one i understand there is an updated version of this bottle where can i get this from.... please???

It is a common fault. Easily fixed and yes there is a later tank with a water level swutch built in. On something this critical landriver or the usual sources, such as Craddocks, etc would be good.
Not sure on part number, will have a look later.
 
Before hauling everything apart, what you may find you have is a pre-heater similar to what lorries have to heat the cab when parked up. The only difference is this thing on the Freelanders is supposed to heat the coolant (oxymoron or what?). It's basically a small engine that works in cold weather and chunders away until the engine warms up beyond idle. Have a look below the corner of the bumper. If there is a small exhaust pipe hanging down, that's it.
 
could it be condensation from the exhaust of the car in front? just sort of creeping up the front of your car?
 
The steam will just be water/ice in the rad, happens after you powerhose a FL

Fractures in the water do happen, but can be air tight, best to change or at least be aware and just keep an eye on coolant levels.


Fans rarely come on, usually temp gauge is well above halfway at this stage.

As for lumpy idle, you'll have to check the usual suspects
 
Update ok I thought I was not losing coolant until 2 days ago then when I checked I had lost about 1cm have checked this morning & it is still at the same level....... could this be the expansion tank fractures. I am only thinking this as the 2 days since i last checked I have not really been sitting in traffic & I have not seen the steam from the front end......I have ordered a tank & cap from britsh parts today so should be here soon.... is there away to test today e.g. if I start it up & level it on my drive for an hour I should be able to see when the pressure builds up where it comes from if it is not just water/ice on rad... Whats your views???
 
Well.............. update I think this was coming from ice on rad or something as now the roads are clear here I see nothing at all & as for coolant leak since i have topped it up it has stayed topped up so unsure if this is related to when I stop & dont move the freelander now....... anyone any other ideas on this now the issue seems to be when I drive a distance & dont move for a while??/
