Hi

The police in kent have issued an open letter warning for all land rover owners to watch out for thieves who are targeting landy's

Wished to give u guys the heads up unless you all ready know

Is it true in saying that modern cars like our freelander can't be started without the keys due to them being computer coded

I imagine there are some thieves out there are switched on but I would have thought they would go for high end cars like, astons, porsche's etc

The freelander have got these thatcham alarms, locking wheel nuts etc

Just got me thinking of how secure they are, I imagine thieves could get inside in about 30 seconds but how easy would it be to drive them away without the keys

Unless I suppose they had a tow truck and lifted them, and unless they disabled the alarm etc

Just wondered after reading this police letter

Gary

Damn wish I lived in Kent.

(Just kidding - I love it really!)

My first thought exactly - my Mum lives in Kent, does this count.

I cant see the old Fleabag being top of the list somehow but tx for the warning!!!:D

Don't worry about it being nicked as it's impossible to start without the keys. The key has a transponder which tells the imobilizer that the key is in the ignition. The imobizer is hooked up and coded to the engine ECU so unless they bring another key, imobilizer and engine ECU it's going nowhere except on a low loader or they nick the keys first!!

Had an interesting Recovery job about 2 years ago. Guy had been hill-walking and dropped his keys. One year old Freelander needed to be recovered to his home address where the spare key was. Fortunately he was parked on gravel. So...dragged the vehicle onto the back of truck... drove 30 miles of winding roads, then 60 miles dual carriageway. Dragged vehicle off my truck..and onto another AA vehicle. Got signature and handed the job off . Driver wasn't impressed when I pointed out that with all that we had done to his pride and joy... the alarm hadn't even gone off! :p

I think they're really talking about Defenders - what other £15k car can you nick as easily? None.

No one wants to nick a fleabag as part of an organisd Landy pilfering operation, joy riders and crack heads are the concern. The Freelander's security is pretty modern so they might be able to break in but I don't think they'd get far without keys.

Hi

Many thanks for the replies and I wished to at least give you guys a heads up after reading this as we all now land rover owners stick together , well aprt from chelsea tractors that is

I didn't think they could nick it without the key, but saw the news about a poor guy with a mercedes where thieves knocked on his door and when he refused to give over the keys they stabbed him

What a tragic world we live in

The reason I also asked is on monday morning about 4am for some unkown reason someone put a rock fired by a catabolt through my front room window and had to go round my land rover in order to do it

Has made me so paranoid and know I haven't cheesed anyone off

Just can't get my head round it why someone should do this, I m£anaged to get outside and there was a black small hatchback with no lights on and all the windows were blacked out , when it saw me it sped off, the police came got a crime number and that was the end of it far as they were concerned

My house insurance ran out and west kent fefused to help me so I've got to try and pay out to get the window replaced, I'm disabled and my wife is on a pension

These ****s really don't know of the aftermath they they leave and still can't work out why

The neighbour who has lived there for 50 years said nothing like this has happened just don't get it why a car would pull up outside my house and put a rock through my window and smashing a double glazed unit

Sorry for the rant but after reading the LR warning wished to also tell you guys

HERE ARE THE PICS AS PROMISED

Gary

Thanks for the headup Gary :), sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident :(. The rozzers are fecking useless with petty crime.

As for that poor Merc chap, you could always keep a spare set if keys with no chip in the blade so that if you hand it over it might buy you time to call the cops. But if someone is that determined just had it over, not worth getting stabbed over.

Better still get a non GPS depenent tracker fitted in your car, GPS jammers can't fool it and they will know where your car is instantly and the coppers will usually give chase and nick the scum.

That's very scary!
If I were in your position I'd think about one of these and one of these.
In fact I might anyway...

just think about it if you had not have gone out they might have come in to nick everything, including you keys and then piled everything in to you freelander and sped off. There was a case a few years ago about pinching Ford Granada's they were just coming along with a single car transporter and hiching them up and takening them away then the dismanteld them and made a good living from the parts until they got court

why would your insurance company help you if your insurance has run out

they are talking about defenders, range rover and discovery mainly we have 3 defenders on farm and wife as rr sport and have been advised to keep a close eye on the defenders mainly we also have a freelander commercial and no mention of that was was brought up so you should be ok

why would your insurance company help you if your insurance has run out

From what I know of "West Kent" they are his landlords so that's who I think Gary meant wouldn't help out. Although, with a crime number I'm surprised they didn't.

Thanks for the replies, yep my insurance ran out and indeed wouldn't expect them to help out

West kent is my landlord and when I rang them I wasn't trying to give them a sob story but asked them if they could replace the window I would then pay monthly until I paid for the broken window, but they said its my problem, which suprised me as they have been very good, but suppose with all the budget cuts they have to say no to things ,

Got my contents insurance renewed but of course know I can't nor wouldn't put a claim in as that's fraud and certainly wouldn't go down that road

Just still can't work it out unless like you say they put the window in then get through the window and nick the tv and keys etc, does make a bit more sense I suppose

Luckily I couldn't sleep and was laying on the sofa watching top gear, but you can see the tv from the road during the day when the curtains are pulled back but have net curtains but you can see it when its on, so going to get some vertical blinds and thanks for the link some cctv

I can't sleep at night anymore until hopefully things will settle down

Maybe they are local and think I'm a benefit cheat etc as I'm on DLA , but I worked for over 25 years as a heating engineer until I had my accident smashing 5 discs

Going to also invest in a flood light out the front with a sensor on it and also seem a sensor you can put on your wall that has an infered beam so if someone comes towards a light will come on or you can attatch it to an alarm in doors

As always money comes into play and just hope that one day these people get the same done to them

I wondered that when I went out there and saw them could have thrown a brick through there side window but could have hit him in the head and hate to admit would have felt guilty and we all know I would have been knicked for gbh or worse

Its the not knowing why that is driving me nuts, I keep myself to myself, could they have got the wrong house

Also going to put some plastic secondary glazing inside the front room window for a bit extra security

Well one I can save up that is, checked the morning my mot car insurance is coming up with having to renew my home insurance and having to pay for the window its been a **** week

Still like everyone else **** happens,

Just worried about the car now

Muat get some pics on here for you just got to get them onto the computer

Thanks guys for listening and I would hate for anyone else to get there home vandalised or there landy knicked

If by me warning others about kent police warning about landy's getting knicked it will be worth it

As land rover owners are the only ones I know who stop by the roadside to help others and still great to see there is still compassion in this screwed up world

Now going to check out all the links etc

Just can't work out why but still I may never know

Gary

have now included pics on earlier post.

please be careful guys and really hope all your landies remain safe and sound

Is'nt it the landlord's responsibility to ensure you house is secure as long as you didn't do the damage? Just a thought.

Hi

I did say to them that I didn't break it and got a police crime number

They advised me if the unit was broken due to wear and tear or the units sealed unit failed they would replace it

But due to it getting broken I'm responasble through my own personel contents insurance

I spoke to the manager at the housing department and he said whilst he's sorry and with all the budget cuts they are not responsable for acts of vandlelism nor where a tenent breaks something

He said as well that they insure the building but not the contents

I do agree with you that if had broke it far enough, as it could have been a lot worse and will teach me not to let my insurance expire again

Got one with saga for £87.00 per year with £9.00 per month which gives accidental insurance, new for old and shed cover including everything that is within the boundary, inc the shed and contents, 50,000 cover with no excess apart from 150 in the event of fire or flood and that no single item is over 2,500

Looks as though its going to cost around 150 to replace the unit but going to get 3 x quotes

Still can't sleep as I'm up with the slighest noise I hear outside

Been looking at a way that if I could buy a pir light then put an infared sensor at the front of the house on the fence so if someone puts one foot on the drive it will put the security light on

Will get cctv later but hopefully could do it cheaply, as I thought otherwise a security light may come on everytime a car drives past but wish to prevent the light shining into the house opposite, then maybe see if I can put an alarm or beep in doors that will warn me someone has crossed the beam

Just trying to use some common sense as clever I am not

Still reaching at the reasons why

Gary

Waste of money, buy cheap and that's exactly what you get.
Any camera under 600+ TVL will be absolutely useless for aiding identification. Sure you may see that someone has passed by the camera but I'm afraid that's all you'll see.
The DVR is a cheap chinese build, there is no internal hard drive fitted so you would need to factor in more money.

Thks

I've been looking at units around the 300 pound mark

I've noticed about they use tvl ie 50 tvl etc and the width ie 9-50mm

So am I right in saying the higer the number the better quality

And the same about the angle of the lens as the same for a camera lens as 9mm is very wide

As I'm just covering the front which is about 25 foot wide

Would of course wait until I get a decent one otherwise like you say need to get a pin sharp image

The hd ones are well over a grand so that's out

The ones I've looked at have a hard drive unit etc

Just wish to try and set a system up that incorperates a security light that will aid the camera in getting a better image etc

Just so many on the market just don't know where to start and hopefully it just being there may deter future people from doing this again

I enjoy working things out and doing electrics so need to start working out where I need to run a electric supply for the security lights and camera, hard drive etc in doors

Gary

Firstly not trying to trivialise your situation but lets look at this rationally

From what I can understand you have had a window smashed and nothing else.

From this I believe you have decided that whoever did this must be trying to steal your vehicle or at least you have got it into your head that the two are linked.

Sounds like a couple of neds have managed to get a hold of a new catapult and were trying it out and you were the unfortunate target.

If you are worried about your safety or that of your property why not contact your local Crime Prevention Officer who will give you FREE advice, he may put you in touch with local organisations who may be able to assist.
