freelander rear diffs

Howya Lads

I have just had the rear diff mountings changed on my wifes freelander and since the job was completed there is severe vibration coming from the rear diff. I had the four wheel alignment done after the mounts and on inspection there is a fair amount of rotational slack in the diff.
I have a spare diff from the 1.8 petrol that she had before the 2 litre TD4 she has now. Are the two diffs the same and can they just be swapped over?? it may be easier for me just to have the diffs swapped rather than investigate the problem in the current one.
any thoughts?

I believe they are both the same.

They are not the same, the gear ratios are different.
TD4 Manual 3.182:1
TD4 Auto 2.91:1
!.8 4.20:1

How come the suppliers all say " fits all Freelander '97 to '06 "

i went upto Landrover (Stratstone) as I was thinking of swaping my diff and I wanted to know how they could be reconised apart but was assured by the bloke i brought it of it was a td4 auto any while up Stratstone's they said that Landrover only listed one to fit all so still at a bit of a loss as it is the final drive and the book says which final drive it should be

I think they are all the same ratio as the gearing is changed via the gearbox final drive in each model application.
Ratio should be 3.214 turns of the prop to give 1 turn of the driveshaft/wheels. Turn them both to check the spare is the same as the one in the car.

hi it says that in the haynes manual but Landrover still insit they only do one now do they mean one cassing with different drives in i really need to get to the bottom of this so I am going to see another landrover garage today I hope

The gearing differential comes from the gearbox, simples.

well I have been up landranger services which is a landrover only garage and they confirmed what the first Landy garage said they do one to fit all it even supprised him as he thought that the v6 would have been different and he refered to what I said about the final drives that it means the gearbox

The rear diffs are all the same, 1.8, 2.0d, td4 and v6, although from approx MY2000 had uprated carrier bearings, but they are all interchangeable.

Are we all agreed now that all freelander 1 diffs are the same or is there someone out there going to throw a spanner in the works lol

I think we've established categorically that all the diffs are the same even the V6 has the same diff.

In Jan 2002 there was a revision to the diff to strengthen the differential carrier bearings which were being worn out on the old design.

From that date all diffs have the part code TVK000180
The new specification differential is compatible with all Intermediate Reduction Drive (IRD) unit designs and ratios.
