Freelander prop question

Hi guys, got the prop stripped down today ready for my new VCU from Bell but on disassembly I noticed that the little tab things that you push down onto the bolts holding the front/rear props to the VCU are knackered, any idea if spares are available and where I'd get a couple from?
 
Got the prop and VCU re-coupled this morning but had one hell of a job with the dust washer things, on driving the first bearing on the washer was digging into the rubber on the bearing making it really hard to turn so I phoned Bell engineering and asked their advice-they said just leave the washers off as they didn't consider them vital to the assembly, fitted without the washers and all spins freely, hope to get the prop back on before the end of the week.
 
I had no problems with the bearings / washers that bell's use :confused:

Which bearings did you use ?

You did fit the washers the right way round ?

Hiya, yes we did have the washers the right way round, Bell were out of stock of bearings when I ordered so I went with their recommended supplier who had two grades of bearing, admittedly I did make a leap of faith and followed Bell's recommendation to buy the cheaper of the two (Bell said the cheaper ones were fine) Ken at Bell said he'd come across the washer problem before but got round it by milling the washer to fit-I don't have access to such facilities.
Ken did stress that there would be no issues with not fitting them so I was happy to proceed.
 
Mine were also the cheaper recommended one's that bell's use from shop4autoparts .
Is it the washer that fits on the prop end and go's in the cup side of bearing , Mine had pleanty of clearance in there ?
 
No it was the one that you fit first on the VCU, it dug into the rubber on the bearing so much you had trouble turning the bearing, the ones on the prop ends came off un damaged on disassembly and fitted back perfectly
 
Some things not fitted right then or the wrong way round ?
If you look at the picture of mine I posted above that washer is no where near the bearing on both the old & new VCU :confused:

Leaving the washers oft increases the chance of the bearing failing due to muck getting in. It's up to you if you want to fit them properly. Those who struggle leave them oft.

I think I may just have to refit the prop as is for the time being-luckily I only do about 2-3k miles each year and once I've recouped a bit of cash sort it out then, or maybe just leave the prop off for the summer and redo the job later in the year.
 
Nothing wrong with leaving the prop and vcu oft. Just make sure you advise yer insurance.
 
Got the prop assembly sorted today, bearings came off easy and I realised that if I got the mud slinger washers started I could just gently tap them home with a small hammer and then once the bearings were re-fitted just tap them back until they are barely touching the bearings without fouling them, feel a bit of a fool for not realising that the first time of fitting!, but at least I know for next time, prop should be back on the car by Friday lunchtime and then it's the dreaded road test lol
 
Right! All back on the car, went fine and the dreaded road test on my local A-road went well accelerating to 60 without so much as a whisper of trouble, happy now and I can no proceed with the oil/filter change tomorrow and air filter and crankcase breather as well.
