have come on here to ask for help.
I have a freelander, 1.8 Petrol 2001.
But It wont start. It won't attempt to turn over, it clicks and that's it.
I have looked all over the forum for where to start.
Here is what no have done so far. I've tested the batter. Yep it works. I've had the started motor out, I got told its broken, brilliant. So I've bought a new one and fitted it. But that didn't fix it. I got the new starter out. Also got that tested. Yep it works. Socan back to the car. I have then tested that the positive side of the starter is getting power. Yep that's fine. The negative side obviously doesn't get anything as that feeds to the fuses. Which lead me on to check them. I've swapped the relays and fuses around with the spares. And still nothing.
I've looked at the ignision and no sign of broken wires.
So that's where I'm at.
Can anybody please help

hi

bit confused when u say “ the negative side doesn't get anything as that feeds the fuses “ unless u wrote that bit down wrong ;)

may i ask ,

1) have u used a multimeter to test you’ve got a good earth
2) what volts do u get at the battery
3) when u turn the ign on what voltage do u get at the starter motor , then as u turn the key to start does the voltage drop at the starter pls

if everything checks out and as a last resort , have u tried turning the engine over with a socket to ensure the engine is free, hopefully it’s nothing like that

plse let us know how u get on

Probably already done this, just like to add, remove and clean battery terminals, your - lead to body earth connection, check + lead connection to the bus bar in the engine fuse box. Or do continuity checks with your multi m

Yer I used a multi meter.
When I turn the key then I have the full 12v or just a little under it. Same as the battery. I don't know how to turn the engine with a socket.
But I can bump it off by towing it with a different car. And it starts that way.
After a lot more testing I have taken the starter off and got it wire to the wires of a different but similar car. I tried start it on that. And it seems to be that the new starter it self may be damage. So I've taken it off and sending it back to the supplier and the will test and replace. Hopefully that's it. But will keep posted in case they say it works fine and is still a different problem

it was surposed to be new.
I bought it from auto electrical in Manchester.
I've sent it back to them. And they should of received it today. So I will await to hear from them monday

I think you have put wires to starter incorrectly, battery lead and feed wire to fuses connect to the same terminal on solenoid, also you need the small wire from ignition to middle connector on solenoid

the possy side of the wire has a big terminal to bolt on with m8 nut. with a plastic covering similar to the battery. So that's definitely on in the right place
The neg side is a small click on terminal and I made sure it's clean. So that's on correctly.

For testing out of the vehicle.

A starter has 3 terminals, including the casing. It won't work unless you have the casing connected to the battery negative (-) terminal on a heavy wire (black jump lead is ideal). The starter is bolted to the engine so is connected to negative when fitted to the engine.

The bolt on terminal goes to the battery positive (+) using a heavy wire (red jump lead is ideal). This is the thick red wire from the battery when fitted.

The small 15 Amp Lucar connector is the trigger or energise wire. This is the small connection when in the vehicle. To start the motor running, this terminal must be made live by linking it the the battery positive (+) terminal using a medium thickness wire of 15 Amp capacity. Then this is connected to the battery, the starter will kick into action so hold it down.
Unless the starter is wired like this, it won't run.

Has anybody got a picture or could get 1.
When I took my starter motor off. I had the big red wire attached to the solenoid. which is what's bolted on. And the spade connector which goes from the soleniod 2 the car relay and fuses. what looks like the 3rd terminal there is a wire stright to the motor about 1cm long. are you saying there should be another wire as well as these.
As I've just had a call from the place I bought my starter motor from. And they say it works.
So please can I get more wiring help.

I will try And attach a oil. it's from a distance. But then people can see where I'm working on it. But it's not close enough 2 see the wires

The starter has just 2 wires going to it. The thin wire is the trigger wire, which is switched by the ignition switch. The thick red wire goes to the theaded bolt on side of the solenoid. This is where the main starting current is fed from the battery to the starter.
The starter mounting bolts supply the ground connection, directly from the engine.
The small hidden wire you're taking about must be left alone, so leave it under its rubber cover.

Here's a picture of a V6 starter, the 4 cylinder is similar.
The connections are circled in red.

yer that's what I thought. And that's how I've wired it up. so I think there must be damage to it somewhere on the trigger side.
My part will be back 2morrow. so at the weekend I will be working on it again. wish me luck.

help again. slightly different problem..
The starter motor is now in. it's earthed and has power. But now it is intermittently.
It bounces in and out but it doesn't turn.
So it's better than before but still can't start It

Did it fail to start (ie not turn over ) or did it stop and then fail to start . .
Have you put it in gear and tried rocking it to see if the engine actually will turn . .if it won't maybe remove the spark plugs and see if water had made its way into one of the cylinders . all things are possible

car will still bump off toeing it with another car. so it runs.
no I don't see daft comments. everything is a valid thing to check. I've tried to rock the car also thinking is the engine stuck. But then toed it after to prove that point wrong. I've taken te starter motor out of the car and tried it then and can see the starter doesn't turn. I tried a few times. te last time the cable feel off tho.
I can't added pictures or videos on this site. so what I might do is upload it on my Facebook then copy the link on here.
