we have just got back from our trip to America and we hired a car while we were there and guess what .NO it was not a Freelander which I would have been happy with it was a f------ Jeep .I suppose as cars go it was ok . at first I though the hand brake was auto as the car was auto ,but no it was a foot operated handbrake on the left hand side of the foot well .I honestly did not know it was there, performance wise it was good plenty of waft in it .but it would be with the big engine it had in .I did not like the drivers seat it seemed as though it was slanted from side to side .not as much room in the back ,but the boot was a bit longer but not as tall so what you gained on the roundabout you lost on the swings. economy was ok .Did I like it ?like I said it was ok , would I have one ,NEVER I like my Freelander and so does the wife.

Which Jeep was it? I quite like the Wrangler 2 door soft top, but only the last of the ones with the folding windscreen. The Grands are ok too, but not sure about the others. I'd have the military spec pickup Wrangler though!
 
Nice Rack :D in 1996 I lusted after a jeep Cherokee , but had no money then , theres an odd one or two about now , and don't look as good as a freelander , the 4x4 I chose when I did have some , and the grands look worse imo than the original ;)
 
hi spacemonkey it was the latest grand Cherokee I will have to find the cc's of it and it was the limited edition. brack mine is the face lift Freelander td4 auto hse and the wifes is a 98 petrol xie and still going strong it has 70,odd thousand miles on it has had the hg done.
 
Te latest Cherokee is WAY better then the freelader. Performs so much better and so muchore space. Service on those cars are
Also a lot easier for a DIY

Mine is the same age and spec as your wife's - nice to still see the older Freelanders running around :)
 
Although there has been a rivalry between LR and Jeep, personally i always saw the Jeep as a clumsy big car. Cant imagine it offroad tbh
 
I had a 1991 Cherokee diesel (Renault engine, same as the Espace) for four years and changed it for the Freelander this year. The jeep was far less refined than the hippo and was really falling apart when I got rid of it but it never broke down. Four wheel drive wasn't that great and it was terrible in the snow (but better than 2WD). I liked the extra low gear option which was really good for towing things out of ditches. Stowage was limited with the spare wheel in the boot but it had quite a wide roof area so good for things on top. I regularly carried two kayaks side by side. I considered getting a newer one but didn't like the Grand series (too big) and parts were becoming a bit of a problem here in France. Strangely, for a non French car Freelander parts are quite easy to find here (there's lots of them around).
 
Interesting... I've always liked the rugged styling of the older 90's Jeeps, and the Grand from late 90's-2003 ish but always thought of them as typical cheap looking Yank tanks inside. Not exactly good in the styling stakes are they? Still like them though, but the Cherry is definitely a budget car despite the over inflated prices they sold for over here.

I frequently use a late 90's-2003 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 V8 engine. It was bought from new and has been one of the most reliable vehicles I have come across. Except for a power steering hose nothing has broke and I would use it full time if I could manage its low mpg. I so like it's robust build which is typical of a lot of American machinery.
 
I used to like the early Jeeps the ones before landrovers I recon the man who drew the picture in the sand at red Warf bay on Angelsea of a landrover he wanted to produce must have seen the American Jeep

That foot brake is for parking on hills, very seldom used here.

V6 or V8 .......... the 6 is 235hp and the 8 is 300hp
