Hello this is my first post, i have recently come by a 51 reg diesel freelander (which i think makes it a freelander 1 ?).
Sadly a family member owned it but pass away young and unexpectedly.
I have now been given the freelander but the problem is the key had been previously lost, would dearly love to get this up and running.It does look like someone as been messing with it as cowling round the ignition barrel as been removed.
What i need to know is could i just buy a used lock set ie key,ignition barrel,petrol cap lock and door lock,then have these programed or would i have to change ecus and the likes ?
As i say any info or advice anyone can give me would be very much appreciated.

Around here, you pop into Introduce Yourself - Land Rover Zone and leave a little intro.

The situation you find yourself in can become very difficult and leading to lots of hair pulling out. If the ignition barrel is bust, I believe you can simply change that with 1 from a breakers - its not coded. However, needing to get a key coded is a different matter. If you go to a breakers to get parts - as well as keys, you will also need the matching CCU and probably ECU because I believe the security codes are linked. I also think there is a link between ECU and something else to keep track of mileage. If you don't find as exact list of what you need - you may start going round in circles.

Alternatively you can get your existing CCU updated with the codes for new keys. Usually this means a trip to a LR dealer and an expensive bill - and they may not touch it anyway - either through choice or lack of knowledge - it varies dealer to dealer. Alternatively, a Hawkeye ODB reader may be able to program the CCU for the new keys. Hawkeyes are about £300 - but you may find someone on the forum willing to help.

I'm none to sure about any of the above. I suggest you do some searches - there have been threads go through about changing keys.
 
Thanks for that, just the sort of info i was looking for would be great if some one had a full list of the exact parts i would need and where abouts in general they are located on the car.
As i think the breakers is the best option, then swop the lot over.
Also would be good to know if i got all the bits from a breakers fitted everything should the car start then or will it still need to go on a machine.
 
Presumably the idea of getting the bits from a breakers would be so that it doesn't have to go on a machine.

It sounds like your barrel is bust and you'll need a new one of those - but if I were you, I'd look to see if Hawkeye can be used to register new keys (either new or 2nd hand) on your existing CCUs - it will save a lot of faffing around.
 
Yes that is the idea as if it needs to go on diagnostics i would have to get a recovery truck etc + find someone who as the right diagnostics.
Was hoping i could source the lock set fuel cap lock, door lock, ignition lock barrel and the key with remote, if i sourced these parts would it then be possible to have these bits programed to the car ?
 
You'd need the immobilisation ecu, engine ecu, keys and lockset from the same car to fix yours.

Or just buy a new key from LR and get it programmed.

Remotes are relatively easy to obtain and get programmed and with a working key you can drive the car to garage to get it done.
 
Sorry I confused matters there. Hawkeye is a hand held device that quite a few of the forum members have - I believe if you have a replacement key (with the locks changed in a matching set) Hawkeye will tell your CCU to allow the replacement key to start the car - but I may be wrong - worth checking.

So ring land rover give them reg and vin number they will then supply me with key, so will this start the car ? is the remote not for the immobiliser ?

So ring land rover give them reg and vin number they will then supply me with key, so will this start the car ? is the remote not for the immobiliser ?

Even if LR can't supply you with a replacement key, they may be able to give you the key code from from which you can have a key cut - you would then need to source a key from a breakers to get the electronic gubbins out of it and use someone like these people to program it into the car Land Rover Freelander Key Fob | Remote Key Fob Replacement | Car Key Fob Repair

If LR supply the key - it will come with replacement electronic gubbins that will need to be programmed to the CCU - either by a dealer, indie or Hawkeye.

I really should shut up, because I probably know less than you!

Hope you get it sorted - there have been similar threads that turned into nightmares for the owners - I believe mainly due to dealers not knowing what to do. Looking at the website I linked to above or just using Hawkeye (see post #21 on the http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f9/anyone-know-how-program-remote-fob-225880.html thread)it sounds as though it should be straight forward - especially if you caan get a key from LR to save the hassle of changing locks.

Your advice as been great thanks. just spoke to a guy i contacted via the link you gave me and he as made things a lot clearer.
At least i am getting options now thanks again.

LR will not issue unless you produce the V5 at the dealership.

If not, a crook could do it couldn't they :(

Rather obvious that i would have thought, i meant assuming i have log book which i have,but worth a mention all the same.

I looked into getting a second key as mine came with only one but this is a relatively simple job and I still haven't done it. To have new keys cut plus get fob and transponder programmed without the first key will be expensive. The car will need collected on a lorry to get it to the garage plus the costs involved. I also read posts from others who had a nightmare getting the correct information to do this as several garages quoted different prices. Some said the ECU needed replaced while others said it didn't.
Whatever you do make sure the garage you take it to has done it before and gives you a quote in writing and make them stick to it before organising transport for the car.

Good luck and please report back how you get on.

hi mate and welcome

as the other guys have said

where abouts in the uk are u plse

u can get an exact copy of ur key from ur dealer ,as said along with a v5 and driving licence

can't remember if ur key has the transponder chip in it

once you've got the key which should fit all ur doors and petrol cap, u need to get that key coded

if it has the transponder , when u put the key in the ign the ring round the ign barrel has to be synced with ur key

can be done by a dealer or as mentioned a hawkeye ,

however people who have lost keys in the past have mentioned if too many codes have been put into the immobilser ecu u will need to buy another ecu which will cost around £400 , some dealers are more helpful than others for some reason

if u get in touch with ur dealer first, go down their , order a key, ask them before hand what the total cost would be to get a functioning key

u can once coded , lock and unlock the car, if u lock the car then quickly lock it again it will deadlock the car for u until u get a new remote ,

it's the key that's the first bit

some people have had nightmares and ended up with 4-500 quid bills ,

ive got a hawkeye and if ur around kent am happy to try and resynch the key for u

if u had to buy a new key set, ecu key etc ur would be looking around the £5-600 quid mark

this is what people have reported back

see what ur main dealer says first and go from there , I think people have been paying around £100 to get a kent and resyn he'd ??

ur spot on with regards to mixed messages coming back

there was reports of if the ecu has i think 10 codes in it , some dealers won't or can't clear them and a new ecu is around £400 I think

others got second hand bits then to be told the dealers won't touch it

some dealers seem to be helpful or just want to flog a new ecu at great expense

the way I understand it is

take licence and v5 to dealer, getting an exact key , so u can use ur existing locks, ign and petrol cap

then it's getting the things resyn he'd is the grey area and the problem

in the hawkeye there's a menu which allows u to now resynch a key with the ecu and also reprogram new or existing key fobs

never done it but got to be cheaper as mentioned than a dealer trying to flog u a new ecu

it seems to change according to where people live and if the dealers can be bothered to help or not
