Given the state my Discovery 1 is now in bodywork wise, ie; HEAVY scratches, dents, torn wing etc, I think this kind of proves my point. ;)

No way was I going to be inflicting that sort of damage on a 37k, brand new motor.

OK - I kinda see where you're coming from.

But as a former rally-driver I have to say that I never let the value of the machinery I was using slow me down or inhibit me as to how I used (or abused) it.

Easy to do when you either;

A) Have somebody else paying for it, or;
B) Have a significant bank balance to support the heavy maintenance of expensive vehicles.

I have neither. Plus it was my every day vehicle.

And if I was in the fortunate position of coming under the latter option, I'd have had a Bowler Wildcat, not an FL2. :D
 
Kudos on the former Rally Driver status though, it's something I'd pursue in a heartbeat if finances allowed.
Always been fascinated by the raw skills of rally driving. :cool:

Yup - funding crazy hobbies is a problem. I reached a level in rallying where I couldn't go any higher without major sponsorship, giving up my day job, and completely devoting my life to it. Magnesium sump-guards, hi-lift cams, Bilstein struts and tyres that do 25 miles max in the forest don't come cheap. :confused:

I chose to do only the rallies I enjoyed most, and stay as a privateer with an all-white car - which I also drove to work, and the wife went shopping in! :eek:

Off-road in a 4X4 is a different kettle of fish altogether and the sense of achievement is more that of overcoming natural obstacles rather than just beating a stop-watch. ;):D

This thread died a bit so I thought I'd try and bring it back to life. I can't of been the only Hippo owner to go out this weekend :)
 
Nice pics Dunc, wish I was there.....really want a go on that axle twister. :D
