Freelander diesel no power

Hi All!
Hopefully you guys got some advice for me... :eek:

I'f got a 2.0 diesel 1999 model and it's got no power, the turbo is not "kicking" in but I did check the turbo and there is nothing wrong with it and no blockage either. Could it be the diesel pump or injectors? Or something else, maybe a sensor or something?

And I had the righ driveshaft replaced and boll joint on both sides and a enjin mounting about 2 months ago. After replacing the front disks and brake pads it shudders at about 80km/h. I checked everything and can't find anything thats loose. Any idea's? :confused:

And last but not least, any driving tips on driving off-road with a freelander? :D

When you accalerate does your engine make a sort of blowing sound?
If yes then
Check the intercooler hoses, mine did the same and it was the top intercooler hose that had a hole in it.
 
Easy enough to see if it is the Diesel pump, take a jar undo the pump at the diesel filter in front, ask someone to turn the starter, should have a strong diesel stream. If the stream is strong then it is not the pump. Next to check the injectors, undo one at a time, and again ask someone to turn the starter should also have a nice even diesel spray. If al this check out bleed the diesel filter in the engin bay.

I'll test the pump and injectors (hopefully this evening).
Just for incase I get stuck, how do I undo the injectors? :eek:
 
With a normal spanner (2 spanners to be presise)You have the metal diesel pipes each have a nut, hold the injector in place with one spanner while undoing the metal pipes nut with the other, but be carefull, spray some Q40 or antiseize on the nuts and injector and leave for a bit before you start to undo the injectors.

The hoses to/from the intercooler tend to split and this is a common cause of a big power loss.
However you also need to check the folowing:
1) Brake lights not working or stuck on (ecu cuts fuel when you brake)
2) Wire from no1 injector damaged.
3) Egr valve leaking. (disable it by removing the thin pipe supplying it with vacuum or preferably remove and clean it first)
4) Wastegate stuck open or linkage has dropped off the actuator.

The Vp37 injection pump is generally very reliable - more so than the later VP30 one fitted to the 25/45/Zr/Zs. In fact I've not heard of one failing.

(And the english, it's not my first language) :eek:

Which injector is the no1 injector when standing in front of the vechicle?
And which wire is it?
And the EGR valve, where is it located? And how do I test the wastegate?

Hi All.

Just an update.

I think i'm just plain stupid... :eek:
I checked the Drive shaft and CV's again on Friday and found that the inner CV on the passenger side is the one that's causing the "shakes".

Only problem is from the main stealer it's almost R6000 for the whole driveshaft and they wont sell me just the bearings!!! :mad:

Anybody know of a place in/around Johannesburg (Southy Africa) where I might find it cheaper? :confused:

I phoned them, they can get the whole driveshaft for R2000 +vat.
A place in Jhb called Dover Parts (Also importing directly from UK) can give it to me for R1964 +vat if I pay cash.

Hi

Looks like after almost 3months I got just about everything sorted for now.

1. CV - I found the outer CV for a Nissan x-trail at a reasonable price (R600) and took out the bearing and replaced it on my F/L outer CV, perfect fit and working 100%

2. No power - This is the BIG one that took me for ever to sort out, after cleaning out the EGR and checking the enjin breather filter (Well there is'nt one in the L-series but only saw that after opening it up) and checking intercooler and turbo hoses and the turbo (one garage wanted to replace the turbo and I told them to bugger off.) As a last resort I took it to a garage that specialize in fuel systems to test the injectors for me, after dropping it of the morning they phoned me about 1 and half hour later and said the nozzles need to be replaced and everything will be R4000. Told them to do it and got my car back that same afternoon and man it moves!!! :D

Just want to thank everyone and landyzone for all your help with this problem.

Now the next question.... :confused:

I got my 2.0 diesel 2000 model a couple of weeks ago for a very reasonable price as it lacked pulling power (above 3000 revs 70 mph or under load) having researched the issue before I bought the motor I gathered that at the very worse it ws going to cost the price of a turbo to fix the problem.:confused:

I checked all the turbo pipes, the boost regulater wasnt stuck, sprayed WD40 on the linkages to the turbo from the regualtor to make sure they wern't sticking, it had just had a new mas. While doing all this I notice the air filter was particulary dirty, I put the everthing back together to go to the local spares shop to get a filter, the car felt no different after all my messing. :( I bought the filter and as its easy to get too I fitted it out side the spares shop and binned the old one.

When I got in the car and set off home, it pulled like a train and has been great since and I 'm chuffed to bits with my Freelander :)
