Freelander diesel 2000 HELP!!

Hi everyone, I'd be really grateful if you could tell me if you've had the same problem...and what the solution might be. I have a Freelander year 2000, diesel (NOT a TD). The engine chuggs/hesitates and eventually cuts out. Will restart after a couple of hours. I've replaced the fuel filter and the air flow metre - so not those. (Is there a crankcase filter in models that are not turbo diesel??).

sounds like the fuel pump in the tank has failed, or that the tank is airlocking, meaning either the cap or tank vent if it has one is faulty.
